About The Position

The Coordinator of Educational Outreach for the Cohen Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies serves as the Institute’s primary liaison to schools and educators across New Hampshire. As a skilled teacher-educator, this team member creates professional development opportunities to deepen teacher knowledge of content and best practices for Holocaust and genocide education. The Coordinator of Educational Outreach also creates open-access educational materials and works with partners on and off campus to meet the needs of teachers. This position falls within the collective bargaining unit for the Keene State College Staff Association (KSCSA), an affiliate of the National Education Association of New Hampshire (NEA-NH).

Requirements

• Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. Education, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, etc.)
• 2 years of relevant experience
• Valid Driver’s License and Safe Driving Record
• Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. Education, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, etc.) and two years’ relevant work experience
• Training in Holocaust and/or genocide studies and demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development in these areas
• Master teacher with demonstrated success in curriculum development and assessment
• Experience creating and leading professional development opportunities for teachers
• Classroom teaching experience (ideally, at the middle or high school level)
• Excellent time management, interpersonal and communication skills, and organizational skills
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision and also as part of a team
• Previous success managing multiple projects or tasks simultaneously and meeting deadlines
• Competency in current computer technologies (e.g., Microsoft 365, Zoom, etc.)
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Experience working with diverse groups and stakeholders
• Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel for work on occasion

Nice To Haves

• Five or more years of relevant teaching experience (ideally, at the middle or high school level)
• Familiarity with different models for curriculum design (e.g., 3C curriculum, Universal Design for Learning, etc.)
• Experience in a college/university work environment
• Ability to speak a second language

Responsibilities

• Teacher Development and Training (35%): Design and implement professional opportunities (learning communities, mentorship cohorts, and more) for middle and high school teachers across New Hampshire to deepen their content knowledge and teaching skills as related to Holocaust and genocide education. Collaborate with schools, districts, and teachers to assess local needs and brainstorm creative solutions to increase teacher support and access to training (e.g., hosting cohorts at sites across the state). Create interactive professional development workshops and trainings for educators with varying levels of content knowledge in multiple modalities (virtually and/or in person). Work to support diverse classroom needs of educators and students (e.g., UDL, learning styles) Travel to schools across New Hampshire to share resources and offer on-site support. Develop and implement a biannual Summer Institute for Educators held at Keene State College. Respond to inquiries from middle and high school teachers in a timely fashion and set up meetings or virtual “office hours” to discuss questions or concerns as needed. Consult with Director to formulate a more formal and coordinated response as needed (e.g., sensitive topics). Maintain relationships with and ongoing learning opportunities for teachers who have participated in past Cohen Institute offerings. Foster a network of sustained support and collaboration. Assess offerings using surveys and other tools to track immediate and longer-term impact. Work with Director on budgetary planning and maintenance as related to educational outreach work.
• Research and Curriculum Design (25%): Develop open-access curriculum, sample (adaptable) lesson plans, LibGuides, and other materials relevant to the teaching of Holocaust and Genocide Studies to meet the needs of teachers, school districts, and other constituencies based on current best practices. Equip and empower educators to make use of these materials. Create a core set of classroom presentations to then be delivered strategically. Work with Director to identify areas for further development in line with the mission and values of the Institute and the College. Conduct scholarly research to guide the creation of materials, ensuring depth, nuance, and accuracy of content. Adhere to best practices in teaching about the Holocaust and genocide. Adhere to the Cohen Institute’s established peer-review system for vetting of all materials. Maintain up to date materials on the Institute’s shared drive.
• Local/Regional/National Collaboration on Educational Initiatives (20%): In conjunction with the Director, foster and maintain additional partnerships that enhance the educational mission of the Institute. For example, working with the NH Commission on Holocaust and Genocide Education, the KSC Southwest Center for Educator Support, New Hampshire Humanities, and/or others. Represent the Institute at conferences and in other settings as appropriate to the role. For example, tabling or presenting at the NEA-NH conference and NH Council for Social Studies Conference, participating in the Association of Holocaust Organizations meetings, and more. Oversight and maintenance of a general educational outreach email account. Maintain and grow an up-to-date spreadsheet of contacts (educators, subject matter experts, local survivors/speakers, and more) in a shared file on the Institute’s shared drive.
• Support Broader Institute Programs and Events (15%): Assists Director and other Institute team members with the organizing and implementation of annual events. Design scaffolding programs for major events in collaboration with partners on and off campus. For example, a professional development workshop tied to the theme of the annual Holocaust Memorial Lecture. Promote broader Institute programs such as study tours, lectures, and other offerings to educational networks. Serve as chair of the Hildebrandt Award committee and as a member of the Excellence in Teaching Award committee. This includes coordinating the timeline for the award process with Institute team members and other partners (such as KSC Marketing), organizing the call for applications, distributing a rubric and guidelines for evaluating the submissions to the review committee, convening a committee meeting to finalize selections, ceremony planning, and more. Work with additional partners across campus to support the aims of educational outreach (e.g., developing lesson plans related to the KSC Archives Special Collection in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, consulting with faculty in the Department of Holocaust and Genocide Studies about trends and best practices in the field, and more).
• Professional Development and Service (5%): Attend professional development trainings on emerging pedagogies and best practices in education – to be planned strategically in conjunction with the Director. Examples might include the USHMM Belfer Conference, Echoes and Reflections, attendance at other regional Holocaust centers’ offerings, and more. Be an engaged member of the campus community, serving on campus committees or working groups as assigned. Other duties as assigned.
