About The Position

The Coordinator of Multicultural Services at Advocate Health is responsible for overseeing services, programs, and health information for individuals who are limited or non-English speaking and/or have sensory assistance needs. This role involves managing interpretation and translation services, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, and working on special projects as assigned. The position is primarily remote but requires the ability to go on-site as needed across the MW AAH footprint.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or equivalent in linguistic or health care field.
  • 2-3 years experience supervising subordinates.
  • 3-5 years providing professional interpreting services, preferably in a health care setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Medical interpretation training; certificate a plus.
  • Bilingual in Spanish, ASL, Hindi, Polish, or Mandarin with proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking.

  • Typing speed of 35 wpm preferred.
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Excel and Word.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the coordination of interpretation and translation services for patients and visitors.
  • Monitor communication issues for inpatients, outpatients, and visitors, seeking resources to resolve them.
  • Facilitate and implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance the patient experience for non-English speaking and special needs patients.
  • Oversee bilingual and special needs interpreters, ensuring effective communication and patient satisfaction.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and evaluate staff performance, including monitoring interpreters' competencies and compliance.
  • Maintain inventory of patient-related communication equipment and assist in the delivery and training for communication aids.
  • Examine invoices for accuracy and submit payment requests for contracted services.
  • Provide interpretation services for staff, patients, family members, and companions.
  • Log interpretation requests for statistical reporting.
  • Coordinate the translation of vital forms into appropriate languages as mandated by statute.
  • Conduct ongoing needs assessments and develop education and resource plans for multicultural awareness.
  • Provide education regarding laws requiring language assistance and available resources.
