Position Purpose: The Second Cook prepares and cooks a wide variety of hot food items for patient, cafeteria, Café 299, and special function foodservice. Maintains the cooking area and equipment in a safe, sanitary condition in accordance with department requirements What you will do: Prepares and cooks hot food items using from scratch cooking methods, mixes and/or other convenience items, and ready to cook products. Utilizes approved recipes and instructions to prepare and cook regular (house) and a variety of modified diet items. Assures that top quality, properly prepared, eye appealing products are produced at all times. Maintains productivity in order to meet department hot food needs as required by meal period schedules. Cleans and sanitizes all cooking areas and equipment as instructed and as needed to meet department sanitation requirements. Uses safe food handling procedures at all times to ensure food wholesomeness including maintaining safe temperatures and maintaining proper food storage to ensure that cross contamination doesn’t result. Maintains proper organization of all food prep, cooking, and refrigerated storage areas to ensure optimal effectiveness of work processes. Working Conditions: Requires prolonged standing, walking, or other constant physical movements. Requires frequent lifting of items weighing up to 50 lbs. and continual working around and with hot ovens, grills, steamers, broilers, etc. Requires working with knives and electric slicers, mixers, and grinders. Minimum Qualifications: Ability to work from written recipes, instructions and schedules. Simple math ability necessary in order to convert recipes. Working knowledge of ovens, mixers, and other kitchen equipment. Completion of a Certified /Food Service Sanitation Course preferred. Requires a minimum of six months but less than one year in this or a related job. Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates.
