About The Position

Prepares and cooks family-style meals for children and employees assigned to the Head Start Program by performing the following duties:

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and six months to one-year related experience or training.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform those operations using units of American money and weight measurements.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Employee must pass a pre-employment physical, TB test, and drug screening and submit to random drug screenings.
  • Must also be able to operate all powered and manual kitchen appliances.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer incumbent have a valid state-issued driver’s license.
  • Incumbent must obtain/maintain Serve Safe Certification within six months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Cooks food in quantities according to menu and number of persons to be served and serves the meals to our Head Start/Early Head Start children in a family-style environment.
  • Ensures that food preparation and delivery follow Head Start performance standards, program policies and procedures, and CACFP policies and procedures.
  • Requests approval, in writing, from the Health and Nutrition Specialist for any menu deviation/substitution prior to implementing this deviation/substitution.
  • Washes dishes.
  • Maintains clean and sanitary conditions in kitchen and storage rooms.
  • Attends and participates in Nutrition Workshops.
  • Attends and participates in training sessions.
  • Assists Lead Cook in ordering and purchasing food supply and keeps records and accounts.
  • Performs related duties as required or as assigned by the Lead Cook, Site Manager or the Director of Children and Family Services.
