As kitchen staff members are responsible for food related service, such as preparing meals and maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen and dining hall, as well as maintaining cleanliness of the kitchen and dining hall facilities. GENERAL FUNCTION YMCA Camp Piomingo is a co-ed overnight camp where campers grow, build confidence, and form lifelong connections. All staff members play an essential role in creating a safe, welcoming, and meaningful camp experience through their daily work and interactions. The Cook supports the Hospitality & Camp Experience Director by preparing and serving nutritious, high-quality meals that fuel campers and staff for active days at camp. This role is central to camper satisfaction, health, and overall experience, helping create a dining environment that is warm, efficient, inclusive, and aligned with YMCA healthy living standards. COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE Hourly Position (rate commensurate with experience) Part-time year-round Full-time hours during summer camp sessions and peak program periods Housing may be available during summer months if needed

Requirements

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Previous cooking, food service, or kitchen experience preferred
  • ServSafe Certification required (YMCA will support certification if needed)
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and basic nutrition practices
  • Ability to follow menus, recipes, and dietary accommodations accurately
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to take direction from leadership
  • Positive attitude, reliability, and commitment to a service-oriented culture
  • Ability to model YMCA values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility
  • Must successfully complete a federal background check
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and work in a fast-paced kitchen environment
  • Ability to lift and carry kitchen supplies and equipment
  • Ability to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and variable schedules during summer
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in high-volume meal service situations
  • Ability to work with individuals of diverse ages, backgrounds, and abilities

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve meals according to menus developed by the Hospitality & Camp Experience Director
  • Assist with daily food preparation, cooking, plating, and serving for campers, staff, and guests
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, and cleanliness standards
  • Support accommodation of allergies, dietary restrictions, and special meal needs
  • Assist with food inventory, proper storage, and kitchen organization
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming kitchen and dining environment
  • Support dishwashing, cleanup, and end-of-day kitchen procedures
  • Assist with special events, group meals, and peak service times
  • Work collaboratively with kitchen staff and camp leadership
  • Model professionalism and positive engagement with campers and staff
  • Complete other duties as assigned
