About The Position

The Lifeguard and Youth Specialist maintains safe swimming conditions for all members, guests, and program participants. This role creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Additionally, the Youth Specialist plans and implements high-quality academic and enrichment activities catered to youth’s interests and needs. This is a full-time position.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Must enjoy working with children.
  • Certifications: CPR/AED for the professional rescuer, YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid, and Oxygen (preferred).
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Successful completion of the Duluth Y’s Lifeguard Assessment prior to employment.
  • Commitment to supporting principles of equal opportunity and affirmative action.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills; detail-oriented.
  • Ability to connect with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Basic knowledge of computers.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of experience as a teacher in a childcare center or related facility.
  • Education/training in field related to youth and families.
  • Demonstrate effective communication.
  • Enthusiasm, patience, creativity, common sense and a commitment to working with children.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Completes related reports as required.
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the youth development and aquatics areas.
  • Maintains an emotionally and physically safe environment for youth.
  • Develops and leads high quality activities/lessons for youth.
  • Communicates with supervisor regarding concerns about children.
  • Has knowledge, understanding, and application of all program policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Works cooperatively with children, parents, other program and building staff.
  • Provides support to volunteers.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  • Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
  • Maintains current certifications.
  • Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Completes additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
