About The Position

Delivers excellent service and maintains safe swimming conditions to all members, guests, and program participants. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Responds to members and guest needs, promotes memberships and programs, and maintains cleanliness and organization of the lobby and pool area. This is a full-time position.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Certifications: CPR/AED for the professional rescuer, YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid, and Oxygen (preferred).
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Successful completion of the Duluth Y’s Lifeguard Assessment prior to employment.
  • Commitment of supporting principles of equal opportunity and affirmative action to achieve a diverse work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills; detail-oriented.
  • Ability to connect with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Previous customer service, sales or related experience; ability to multi-task.
  • Basic knowledge of computers.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  • Provides excellent service to members, guests, and program participants in the branch and on the phone, contributing to member retention.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the membership and aquatics areas.
  • Handles and resolves member concerns and informs supervisor of unusual situations or unresolved issues.
  • Interviews and/or tours prospective members; sells memberships; completes merchandise sales.
  • Folds and hands out towels; maintains desk and lobby cleanliness.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  • Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
  • Maintains current certifications.
  • Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Completes additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Fosters an inclusive environment appreciative of differences in the workplace.
