About The Position

The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is proud to be a Michigan Veteran's Affairs Agency (MVAA) Gold Level Veteran Friendly Employer. MDOC employs nearly 1,500 veterans and actively serving military members across the department, offering many benefits and services to support military and veteran employees, spouses, and families. The positions available are for cooks at the Jackson Area Facilities, specifically Cook 5/E6 and Cook 7 roles. The Cook 5/E6 position involves performing a full range of cooking and food preparation for the service of meals for prisoners and staff in a correctional facility, while the Cook 7 position functions as a lead worker overseeing prisoner workers in meal preparation and service. Both positions are designated as Drug and Alcohol Randomly Tested (DART) positions.

Requirements

• Education typically acquired through completion of high school.
• Cook 5: No specific type or amount of experience required.
• Cook E6: One year of experience in quantity cooking and food preparation.
• Cook 7: Two years of experience in quantity cooking and food preparation, including one year equivalent to a Cook E6.

Responsibilities

• Perform a full range of cooking and food preparation for the service of meals for prisoners and staff.
• Use MDOC standardized processes, recipes, menus, and reports.
• Oversee prisoner workers in the preparation and service of meals (for Cook 7).
