About The Position

Our vision is to ensure that "Washington state's children and youth grow up safe and healthy-thriving physically, emotionally and academically, nurtured by family and community." The Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) is accepting applications for a Cook 2 to direct oversight of all nutritional programming so youth have the nutrition needed to support their health and ability to follow their treatment program. Kitchen staff are essential to the daily operations of this campus, and as a Cook 2, you will play a particularly critical role. As lead staff, you will oversee meal preparation, kitchen coordination, and ensure that food service runs smoothly across shifts. Cooks prepare and serve nutritious meals to youth and staff at Echo Glen Children's Center in accordance with Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) standards. In addition to meal preparation, you will teach culinary skills to youth and model strong work ethics. These skills are instrumental in helping youth transition successfully into the community and directly support the rehabilitative programming within the institution. As this position is in a kitchen environment, you may stand for long periods of time, lifting, and conducting repetitive tasks.

Requirements

  • Two years of cooking experience in large-scale food service or culinary operation. Completion of course in large-scale cooking may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • OR
  • One year as a Cook 1 in State service.
  • A current Food Worker card.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in preparing and cooking food in an institution or institutional camp.
  • Possess expertise in providing services to urban youth and have an understanding of juvenile offender behavior.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with management, peers, clients, and the public as required to carry out the assigned duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in preparation and service of food on the assigned shift.
  • Oversee, delegate, and instruct food preparation duties to Cook I, Intermittent Cooks, Food Aides, and resident kitchen aids.
  • Prepare food following standardized recipes.
  • Inspect food being prepared to ensure the proper quantity, quality, and handling.
  • Instruct and train employees and resident kitchen help in cooking, preparing, and handling food consistent with health requirements.
  • Ensure daily inspection of refrigerators, freezers, hot carts, and steam tables for proper temperature control.
  • Operate and maintain all standard and industrial kitchen equipment in a large-scale kitchen environment.
  • Instruct delegate and supervise the use of the kitchen equipment.
  • Ensure cleaning of kitchen, dining area, utensils, and equipment.
  • Receive and put away food supplies.
  • Maintain kitchen equipment and report repair needs to the food manager.
