Cates Control Systems is looking to hire a Controls Test Engineer to our team in Plano, TX . Joining the Cates team is both challenging and rewarding. Job Purpose Lead and execute testing procedures for control panels, ensuring compliance with design standards, UL and NEC requirements, and operational functionality. Perform detailed quality assurance tasks, guide team members, and support project execution and testing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in control systems, panel testing, or related fields.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work in diverse, multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Leadership and mentoring capabilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical thinking.
  • Ability to multitask and manage priorities effectively.
  • Proficiency in AC and DC circuits, including Kirchhoff’s, Ohm’s, and Watt’s laws.
  • Familiarity with NEC, UL508A, and NFPA 70 standards.
  • Expertise in PLC hardware, ladder logic, and programming from various manufacturers.
  • Understanding of advanced motor controls, closed-loop systems, and automation processes.
  • Skilled in configuring and troubleshooting AC/DC drives, motors, and transformers.
  • Proficiency in using digital multimeters for electrical diagnostics.
  • Competence in evaluating panel construction documentation and configuring components for operational testing.
  • Completion of UL508A, NEC, or equivalent training or job experience.
  • Physical ability to bend, stand, and work for extended periods as required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive tests on control panels, including verifying wire connections, labeling, fuse compliance, and wire fray inspections.
  • Apply required voltages and confirm correct operation of all components.
  • Ensure all control panels meet UL requirements, applying identification and UL stickers when necessary.
  • Complete and verify check sheets associated with drawings and ensure quality before handoff to the shipping department.
  • Use tools like multimeters to perform electrical readings and diagnostics.
  • Provide troubleshooting support to customers over the phone or onsite as required.
  • Lead the interdisciplinary team in Corrective Action response for any Fabrication errors that reach Cates customers.
  • Provide technical expertise during project execution, assisting in the design and implementation of control systems.
  • Develop and document testing procedures for standard and customized panels.
  • Mentor test technicians and junior team members, ensuring adherence to procedures and knowledge transfer.
  • Upload and Test ladder logic, applying knowledge of PLC/PC controllers.
  • Troubleshoot different industrial networks like EtherNet, ProfiNet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, EtherCAT and Profibus.
  • Upload and Test customer configuration parameters in VFD or Servo Drive applications.
  • Review customer and internal schematics for accuracy, functionality, and manufacturability.
  • Maintain and enhance company Quality Management Systems.
  • Log time and tasks into systems like Epicor using job-specific travelers.
  • Assist CAD/Engineering teams in developing Motor, Instrument, and I/O Lists from P&IDs.
  • Aid in component selection to meet construction and compliance standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing or operational issues in control panels.
  • Identify risks in designs or processes and recommend solutions to mitigate potential issues.
