We are seeking an experienced Controls Technician is responsible for supporting safe, reliable, and efficient manufacturing operations through hands-on troubleshooting, maintenance, and improvement of PLC-controlled equipment and automation systems. This role also focuses on diagnosing and resolving control-related downtime, performing preventative and predictive maintenance, and supporting equipment startups, modifications, and reliability improvements. Working closely with Maintenance, Engineering, Production, and Operations, to help contribute to continuous improvement efforts, equipment upgrades, and adherence to electrical safety and controls standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED plus an associate degree or technical certification in electronics, instrumentation, or mechatronics. A combination of hands-on experience and education can also be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical or maintenance roles.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with motion control systems, VFDs, and servo drives.
  • Advanced proficiency with computers and engineering-related software.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable working with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required to support production and project needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Controls, or Automation Engineering, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Experience commissioning new equipment and supporting startup activities in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience working with outside vendors, system integrators, and equipment OEMs.
  • Basic CAD skills are preferred but not required.
  • Ability to document controls standards, procedures, and best practices.
  • Ability to travel occasionally.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair PLC-controlled manufacturing equipment to support safe and reliable production operations.
  • Diagnose and resolve controls-related equipment downtime involving PLCs, HMIs, sensors, VFDs, servos, and safety devices.
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance activities on control systems and automation equipment.
  • Support startup, testing, and validation of repaired or modified equipment.
  • Assist with minor programming changes to PLCs and HMIs under the direction of Engineering or Maintenance leadership.
  • Perform hands-on investigation and repair directly on manufacturing lines and equipment.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, ladder logic, and control documentation.
  • Support installation, modification, and replacement of control panels, devices, and field wiring.
  • Work safely with energized equipment in accordance with company procedures and applicable electrical safety standards.
  • Document repairs, changes, and improvements made to control systems.
  • Identify recurring equipment issues and assist with root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Support equipment reliability improvements through automation and controls enhancements.
  • Collaborate with Engineering on equipment upgrades, retrofits, and automation projects.
  • Recommend improvements to control standards, maintenance practices, and spare parts strategies.
  • Work closely with Maintenance, Production, Engineering, and Operations teams to support production goals.
  • Communicate equipment status, downtime causes, and repair actions clearly to team members and supervisors.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors and contractors for controls-related service and support as needed.
  • Participate in shift handoffs, maintenance meetings, and troubleshooting discussions.
