About The Position

The Controls Technician installs, maintains, programs, diagnoses, and repairs complex building automation systems (BAS), pneumatic controls, and electronic components to optimize HVAC/R equipment performance. This position performs expert level work on commercial and industrial systems integrating HVAC/R hardware with computer-based controls for energy efficiency and environmental control. The position has no direct reports and works primarily independently, with occasional teamwork, under direct supervision.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in HVAC/R, controls, or equivalent required.
  • 3+ years in HVAC/R with specific experience in control systems required.
  • EPA Universal Certification required.
  • Valid class D driver’s license and commercial insurability required.
  • Federal Medical Card to transport large commercial trailers a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving, mechanical, and analytical skills.
  • Proficient and safe use of trade tools, equipment, materials, and methods.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex manuals, control schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and code, experience with pneumatic and digital systems.
  • Capable of designing, laying out, and developing material lists for repairs, maintenance, and installations.
  • Strong planning, organization, prioritization, and task management skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and meet deadlines.
  • Performs effectively in fast paced, high stress environments.
  • Skilled in operating aerial lift equipment (scissor lifts, boom lifts).
  • Strong computer skills for software troubleshooting and configuration.
  • Works effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Exhibits strong work habits: punctuality, accountability, thoroughness, and resourcefulness.
  • Willing and Abe to travel to job sites 100% of the time.
  • Ability to work a non-standard schedule including emergency on-call, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 2–4 hours while traveling to and working on jobsites.
  • Regularly walks through indoor and outdoor jobsites, including uneven surfaces.
  • Frequently uses commercial vehicles, power tools, and mobile devices; occasionally uses computers and office equipment.
  • Requires repetitive finger motion, hand dexterity, elbow bending and prolong outward and upward arm extension.
  • Frequently required to ascend/descend stairs and ladders to access all areas of equipment and jobsites including rooftops.
  • Frequently required to bend, stoop and access small, confined spaces.
  • Frequently communicates with internal and external customers using spoken word and the ability to perceive the natural sounds of normal speaking levels.
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information through oral and written communication and make fine discriminations in sound.
  • Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
  • Uses visual acuity at near, far, and peripheral distances, and must be able to adjust focus.
  • Frequently uses vision to operate vehicles, tools, equipment, and to read technical information.
  • Frequently lifts, pushes, or carries up to 50 pounds and occasionally more than 75 pounds.
  • May work near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to loud noise, vibration, dust, low light conditions, and extreme temperatures, including outdoor weather.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE for the full shift.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, configures, and programs Building Automation Systems (BAS), PLC controllers, and environmental controls.
  • Diagnoses and repairs pneumatic, electronic, and digital control systems, including sensors, thermostats, VFDs, and actuators.
  • Calibrates temperature, pressure, and humidity controls; performs preventive HVAC/R maintenance.
  • Installs electrical wiring, relays, and interlocks for HVAC/R systems.
  • Uses software to monitor system performance, adjust control logic, and manage BAS networking (BACnet, Modbus, N2).
  • Communicates project plans, progress, and results with internal teams, clients, and customers.
  • Reviews mechanical design plans and provides HVAC/R control sequences of operation for remodels, upgrades, and new construction.
  • Records work progress and documentation in the computerized management system.
  • Prepares work areas, gathers materials, safely operates and maintains tools & company vehicle, and cleans up after project completion.
  • Collaborates professionally with external contractors and ensures compliance with codes and standards.
  • Sets and achieves individual goals and contributes to department objectives.
  • Demonstrates strong communication, versatility, follow through, and customer focus.
  • Upholds professionalism, timeliness, accuracy, and a positive company image.
  • Adheres to all company and industry safety protocols.
  • Assists in developing specifications for repairs and new construction.
  • Trains and mentors’ other staff as needed.
  • Supports and serves as backup to other field positions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by authorized personnel.
