Position Summary The Controls Service Technician IV serves as a Senior Lead Controls Technician responsible for advanced diagnostics, system architecture troubleshooting, complex BAS integrations, and technical leadership within the service team. This role provides expert-level support on critical service issues, drives resolution of complex system failures, and serves as a regional escalation resource for building automation challenges. The Senior Lead Technician operates independently in the field, leads technical execution on complex service activities and small projects, mentors technicians, and works directly with customers, IT departments, and equipment vendors to maintain and optimize building automation systems.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8–12 years of building automation or controls service experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in BAS troubleshooting, programming modifications, system integrations, and advanced diagnostics.
  • Strong background in IP networking, BAS communications, and IT coordination within commercial facilities.
  • Experience working with HVAC mechanical systems and control strategies.
  • Proven ability to lead technical work in the field and support other technicians.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate technical information clearly.
  • Ability to work independently and manage complex service situations.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass required background and pre-employment screening.

Responsibilities

  • Perform expert-level troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair of complex building automation systems including HVAC controls, energy management systems, and integrated mechanical equipment.
  • Lead resolution of advanced system failures involving programming logic, control sequences, communications networks, databases, and integrations.
  • Review, modify, and optimize control programming, graphics, databases, workstation configurations, and user interfaces.
  • Analyze and correct sequence-of-operation issues and system performance deficiencies.
  • Execute firmware, software, and system upgrades while maintaining operational continuity.
  • Diagnose and resolve advanced IP network and BAS communication issues including routing, switching, VLAN configuration, remote access, and protocol integration.
  • Coordinate directly with customer IT departments on network architecture, cybersecurity considerations, IP addressing, and system connectivity.
  • Lead integrations between building automation systems and third-party equipment or enterprise platforms.
  • Deploy monitoring tools and maintain secure remote connectivity for system support.
  • Serve as technical lead on complex service calls and small service projects.
  • Provide field leadership and work direction to supporting technicians.
  • Act as the escalation resource for high-level technical issues within the service organization.
  • Review system designs, sequences, and technical solutions to ensure serviceability and long-term performance.
  • Support service managers and sales teams with technical evaluations and solution development when needed.
  • Interface directly with building owners, facility managers, and engineering teams to diagnose issues and present technical solutions.
  • Lead system inspections, functional testing, and performance verification.
  • Provide customer training on system operations and optimization strategies.
  • Maintain accurate service documentation including work orders, technical reports, and system updates.
  • Mentor technicians and provide hands-on technical training in controls systems, troubleshooting methodology, and best practices.
  • Share product knowledge, integration techniques, and field experience with team members.
  • Promote safe work practices, quality standards, and continuous improvement within the service organization.
