About The Position

We are currently in search of a Controls Engineer - System Architect to join our Industrial Engineering department of the Marquardt Group in our location Cazenovia (USA). The Controls Engineer – System Architect is a technical lead on a software controls team responsible for production manufacturing equipment, specifying and integrating hardware, software, and network components. It is a hands-on role responsible for defining and implementing automation controls on key projects and mentoring team members. The position has responsibilities throughout the entire project life cycle including quote, concept, implementation and acceptance testing. Ideal candidate will be an expert in controls for production equipment with contributions in cross functional fields such as power electronics, mechanical design, manufacturing processes and/or project management.

Requirements

  • 15+ years relevant experience including college-level related course work
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (preferred)
  • Proven ability to conceptualize and communicate controls designs including system diagrams, component diagrams and logic flow charts.
  • Experience with PLC programming including structured text, function-block diagram, and flowchart-based computer languages.
  • Experience with industrial robot programming and simulations.
  • Familiar with organizing systems into testable and reusable subsystems.
  • Familiar with methods for code reuse and version control.
  • Ability to mentor and lead technical discussions and support team growth.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate to create solutions for manufacturing automation.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve issues on complex equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiar with Beckhoff IPC/PLC and components a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Controls / Equipment System Architect focuses on designing and developing controls software, structure and standards for new products, machines, components, or assemblies including:
  • Developing automation controls that meet customer technical/functional specifications as well as manufacturing cost/efficiency requirements and Marquardt best practices
  • Mentoring team members on controls methods, software architecture, and helping solve problems as they arise.
  • Providing key contributions to cross functional design reviews and lessons learned.
  • Leading standardization activities within department, carrying out code reviews and championing best practices.
  • Contributing to equipment commissioning quotes, schedules and timelines.
  • Performing proof of concepts for new equipment and processes, including conducting calculations, modelling or simulations to assess feasibility of concepts and propose changes.
  • Supporting in-house preproduction builds on the equipment and Factory Acceptance Testing.
  • Working with other Marquardt facilities to promote best practices in controls design and programming.
  • Implement engineering changes and update all required documentation, software, etc.
  • Coordinate Maintenance department training and documentation
  • Participate in troubleshooting knowledge transfer to the Maintenance department so production can support the equipment where possible
  • Prepare spare parts definitions and documentation
  • Serve as primary technical resource for assigned equipment currently in production in order to improve on future design
  • Other activities, projects, experiments as assigned
  • Product improvement and cost reduction proposals
  • Project status planning and reporting
  • Occasional travel may be required to support domestic or international equipment installations
