About The Position

Qualdoc is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to support the design, development, and optimization of electrical control systems for overhead cranes and lifting equipment. This is a full-time, onsite role based in Ashland, VA. This position requires a higher level of expertise in automation, controls integration, and system troubleshooting, with a strong focus on ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant crane operations. The Controls Engineer will play a key role in both new system design and modernization of existing crane systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of experience in controls engineering, preferably in overhead cranes or heavy industrial systems
  • Strong experience with: PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar)
  • Strong experience with: HMI/SCADA systems
  • Strong experience with: VFDs and motor control systems
  • Ability to design and interpret electrical schematics and control systems
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of crane motion control (hoist, trolley, bridge)
  • Familiarity with CMAA, NEC, and ASME standards

  • Experience with crane automation, anti-sway systems, or load monitoring systems
  • Background in system integration and commissioning in industrial environments
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in industrial settings and at heights when required
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop electrical control systems for overhead cranes and material handling equipment
  • Create and review PLC programs, HMI interfaces, and control logic for crane motion systems
  • Develop detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts
  • Select and integrate components such as VFDs, relays, sensors, and safety systems
  • Ensure compliance with CMAA, NFPA 70 (NEC), and ASME B30 standards
  • Lead and support installation, commissioning, and startup of crane control systems
  • Configure and troubleshoot PLCs, VFDs, and communication networks
  • Perform system testing, validation, and performance optimization
  • Diagnose and resolve complex electrical and controls issues in crane systems
  • Provide technical support for field service teams and maintenance personnel
  • Assist with system upgrades, retrofits, and modernization projects
  • Work closely with mechanical engineers, project managers, and technicians
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers or technicians
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance system reliability and efficiency
