About The Position

We are seeking a highly skilled Controls Engineer III to join our team at ATS Life Sciences Chicago. In this role, you will lead the design, programming, and implementation of electrical and control systems for advanced automated equipment. You will play a key leadership role in large, multi-module automation projects (>$1.5M), ensuring that all systems meet customer requirements, internal standards, and regulatory expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 6+ years of experience in automation and controls engineering.
  • Proficiency with Allen-Bradley PLCs, HMIs, servo control, and electrical design.
  • Proficient in EPLAN, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Hands-on experience with tools such as calipers, micrometers, multimeters, and other measurement instruments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with machine vision systems (Cognex or Keyence) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of controls architecture for large, multi-module automation systems.
  • Program control and vision systems for cam, servo, and air-operated stations, as well as test and electrical devices.
  • Ensure electrical design and software architecture are functional, robust, and cost-effective.
  • Incorporate ATS Life Sciences Chicago standards and regulatory requirements into every design.
  • Research, specify, and select appropriate components and materials.
  • Develop and maintain electrical wiring schematics, flow diagrams, panel layouts, bills of materials, and release documentation.
  • Participate in internal and customer design reviews, installations, and service calls as needed.
  • Guide and support electricians in wiring and code compliance.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to identify functional and economical design solutions.
  • Contribute to project execution plans, ensuring adherence to schedule and budget.
  • Troubleshoot and debug software issues alongside Mechanical Builders and Electricians.
  • Document changes and updates thoroughly.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to Controls Engineers I and II.
