About the position

Nichols Brothers Boat Builders has been building boats on beautiful Whidbey Island since 1964. We are in Freeland, WA where we produce state-of-the-art vessels, tugs, ferries, fire boats, fishing vessels, barges, dinner boats, along with many other sophisticated ships. Everett Ship Repair is the Pacific Northwest’s Premier Ship Repair Facility. Founded in 2019, Everett Ship Repair offers vast ship repair capabilities from its facility in Everett, Washington, including repair, maintenance, and conversion services for any type of commercial vessels, with focus on commercial workboats and passenger vessels. Together these two operating companies comprise the heft and might of Ice Cap Holdings’ presence in the maritime community of the Pacific Northwest. Shared Ice Services (“SIS”) is the umbrella company that provides essential support services to our two shipyards, Nichols Brothers Boat Builders (“NBBB”) and Everett Ship Repair(“ESR”). Shared Ice Services, coupled with these two operating companies, comprise the heft and might of Ice Cap Holdings’ presence in the maritime community of the Pacific Northwest. Shared Ice Services (SIS) is seeking a collaborative and experienced individual to serve as our Controller - Accounting Manager. This position will play a key role in the financial management and reporting for our two operating shipyards. This position will provide lead accounting support to NBBB, ESR, and SIS. This position is based in our Everett Ship Repair yard, with regular travel to our NBBB yard in Freeland, WA.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of a full-cycle accounting team for a multi-entity organization.
  • Supervisory and Leadership duties to direct, motivate, and develop employees for maximum performance.
  • Allocate tasks across the team and drive team performance from a group of individual contributors.
  • Develop staff by managing performance, setting goals, providing ongoing training, and maintaining strong employee relationships.
  • Manage personnel issues relating to staff conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc.
  • Develop and maintain financial processes, including a strong internal control environment to assure the records of the company are in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and other regulatory requirements, as applicable.
  • Develop and administer cost accounting procedures and policies for a multi-entity organization.
  • Perform Exception analysis on the G/L.
  • Complete monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial audit activities and the annual corporate financial controls audit for Ice Cap Holdings, including shipyard operations in Freeland and Everett, Washington for annual financial audit and for 401(k) plan.
  • Manage relationships with state and federal tax agencies and authorities and assist with compilation of information for preparation of tax returns.
  • Communicate monthly operating results, and strategic initiatives to management as needed.
  • Provide advice and counsel to department leaders and executive management on the financial consequences of business decisions.
  • Develop and implement control systems to ensure compliance with company policy and statutory requirements.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of positive pay transactions.
  • Lead / contribute to cost control / reduction initiatives, ensure unfavorable variances are addressed.
  • Participate in strategic financial projects including upgrades and implementation of new ERP / Accounting software.
  • Develop and administer process for tracking fixed assets.
  • Ensure compliance with internal control policies in a SOX environment.
  • Analyze the effect of statutory accounting practices and study regulations and guidance to ensure correct application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Manage the organization's insurance policies, including coverage and risk assessment.
  • Recommends changes as needed to ensure compliance and prevent fraud.
  • Other tasks as needed that may arise in our exciting work environment.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Accounting from an accredited university.
  • CPA certification.
  • 7 – 10 years of related experience ideally with a mix of public accounting experience and experience in a public company with a manufacturing or construction environment.
  • Extensive experience in purchase order processing, project billing and managing Work-in-Progress (WIP) accounts.
  • Strong Job Cost Accounting and Cost-to-Cost Percentage Complete accounting experience.
  • Mastery of GAAP principles and IAS regulations.
  • Strong organizational and communications skills.
  • Skill in directing and coordinating the work of others; act as a leader and be recognized as such by others.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced deadline driven environment.
  • Experience working with multi-entity consolidation.
  • Effective leadership and team-building skills.
  • High level of customer focus and ability to maintain a positive attitude always.
  • Manage multiple assignments and deadlines effectively.
  • High degree of professionalism and integrity.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups at all levels from company.
  • Proficiency with MS Office software, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Nice-to-haves

  • Big 4 public accounting experience and experience as a Senior Accountant is strongly preferred.
  • Master’s degree in accounting strongly preferred.
  • Works to continue personal competency through education, outside literature, seminars, or the like.
  • Mastery of Microsoft Excel and Access.
  • Knowledge of previous experience in Sage X3 and MS Project.
  • Experience in public accounting and auditing or running audits from an internal position.
