About The Position

MEAG Wansley Unit #9 is a cutting-edge power generation facility featuring two GE 7FA gas turbines and one GE D11 steam turbine, delivering a robust 503 MW of electricity to the grid. Fueled exclusively by natural gas, the plant exhibits remarkable flexibility, cycling as needed to meet changing energy demands, particularly during the summer peak season, ensuring a reliable and resilient power supply. Opportunity Summary The Control Room Operator continuously monitors the status and performance of all combined-cycle plant systems at MEAG Wansley Unit #9, including combustion turbines, HRSGs, the steam turbine, generators, and auxiliary systems. The CRO responds to alarms and abnormal conditions, executes plant start-up, shutdown, and dispatch-driven operations, performs field inspections and local control actions as needed, and supports troubleshooting, maintenance, and outage activities while adhering to approved operating procedures, technical manuals, plant guidelines, and safety and environmental requirements. Your scope of responsibility as Control Room Operator will include the following primary functions:

Requirements

  • We are seeking a skilled Operator with a foundation in power generation operations, along with a proven ability to support team success and consistently meet performance standards.
  • Demonstrated experience in power plant operations, with a strong emphasis on control room operations, system monitoring, and plant dispatch response.
  • Strong working knowledge of plant equipment, systems, and operating procedures, including combustion turbine generators, HRSGs, steam turbine generators, generators, and associated auxiliary systems.
  • Demonstrated theoretical and practical understanding of combustion turbine and steam turbine operations, closed-loop steam generation processes, industrial safety practices, hazardous materials handling, and the monitoring, inspection, and documentation of plant operating parameters.
  • Experience with water chemistry control and monitoring, including sampling, analysis of water conditions, coordination with water treatment systems, and safe handling of treatment chemicals.
  • Proven ability to support and promote safety and environmental compliance, with a consistent record of adhering to regulatory requirements and plant safety programs.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, enabling clear and accurate communication with plant personnel, supervisors, and management during routine operations and abnormal conditions.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.

Nice To Haves

  • An Associate degree in Power Plant Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Process Technology, or a related field is preferred. Alternatively, equivalent technical training in industrial maintenance or instrumentation and control is beneficial, though not required.
  • Preferred experience includes the direct operation of a large-frame, natural gas–fired combined-cycle power plant.

Responsibilities

  • Continuously monitor the status and performance of all combined-cycle plant systems, including combustion turbines, HRSGs, the steam turbine, generators, auxiliary systems, and plant instrumentation.
  • Observe, record, and trend operating data from control systems and field instrumentation, identifying deviations from prescribed operating limits and procedures.
  • Respond to alarms, abnormal conditions, and plant upsets by taking appropriate corrective actions in accordance with approved operating procedures and plant directives.
  • Execute plant start-up, shutdown, and load changes as required to meet operational and dispatch requirements.
  • Perform periodic field inspections, including visual and audible checks of equipment, to identify abnormal conditions, leaks, vibration, or other indicators of potential equipment issues.
  • Perform or support routine water chemistry sampling and analysis, verifying water quality remains within established specifications and reporting deviations as required.
  • Operate manual and local controls, including opening and closing valves, switching equipment, and placing systems in or out of service to maintain safe and efficient plant operation.
  • Maintain accurate and timely shift logs and operating records, documenting operating conditions, alarms, maintenance activities, and actions taken during the shift.
  • Conduct thorough and effective shift turnovers, clearly communicating plant status, operating conditions, outstanding issues, and safety concerns to incoming personnel.
  • Identify and report plant abnormalities, unsafe conditions, or hazards to appropriate personnel and coordinate corrective actions.
  • Participate in troubleshooting and diagnostic activities in coordination with operations, maintenance, and technical staff.
  • Support maintenance activities during normal operations and outages by assisting with Lockout/Tagout implementation, equipment identification, operational clearances, field support, and work request preparation.
  • Participate in the Facility Confined Space Rescue Team, as required by site procedures and training.
  • Maintain and reference plant operating procedures, technical manuals, drawings, and documentation to support safe and compliant operations.
  • Adhere to all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements, maintaining good housekeeping practices and supporting a safe working environment.
  • Execute assigned tasks from the Operations Manager, contributing to the operational success of the plant.
