About The Position

Incorporating state-of-the-art technology, the Lockport Cogeneration Facility harnesses the potential of three GE Frame 6B combustion turbine generators (CTGs), which work in tandem with three heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) and a steam turbine generator (STG). This dynamic synergy empowers the facility to produce a reliable 198 megawatts (MW) of electricity and an impressive 315,800 pounds per hour of process steam. Remarkably, it operates seamlessly year-round as a steadfast base load provider, consistently meeting the host facility's demands for both electricity and steam. Opportunity Summary The Control Room Operator (CRO) is responsible for monitoring the status of all plant systems on a continuous basis. The CRO ensures that alarms and upset conditions are properly cleared and reported by taking appropriate corrective actions and ensures that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating in a safe and efficient manner.

Requirements

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school is required
  • Extensive working knowledge of power plant industry desired
  • Experience as a Control Room Operator or equivalent position in an operating or generating plant is desired
  • In-depth knowledge of the startup and shutdown procedures of a power plant
  • Experience in water chemistry control, water condition analysis, water treatment facility operations and chemical handling requirements is desired
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed system generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management and inspection/recording of plant parameters is highly desirable
  • Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls desirable
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must have excellent organizational skills
  • Valid driver's license is required

  • Physical requirements include standing for extended periods requiring stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.).
  • Work with hazardous materials may be required.
  • All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
  • Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions.
  • “On call” status will periodically be required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains all shift operations and maintenance documents
  • Observes and records data for instrumentation located throughout the facility
  • Monitors readings from instrumentation for variances from prescribed operating standards and procedures
  • Uses prescribed plant operating procedures to adjust manual controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, switch to backup equipment or systems, or to shut down equipment
  • Visually inspects and listens to equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment, or lubrication
  • Performs chemical analysis on various plant systems to ensure that required water purity is maintained and within specification
  • Records operation and maintenance actions taken during shift in operators’ logbook
  • Opens and closes valves as required for proper system operation and Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments
  • Reports and corrects unsafe conditions or hazards to the Operations Manager
  • Operates plant equipment (trucks, crane, forklift)
  • Prepares legible and understandable work requests purchase requests for required predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance
  • Secures and isolates equipment under Lockout/Tagout for maintenance purposes
  • Assists maintenance technicians as directed by the Operations Manager
  • Maintain a safe working environment to include good housekeeping practices of assigned work area and comply with all applicable environmental, health and safety policies.
  • Issues work permits and supervises work of contractors
  • Controls visitor and contractor access to the site. Maintains site security.
  • Operates site gas turbine generators to meet customer dispatch
  • Communicates and coordinates with the customer energy trading and, transmission entities
  • Responds to all alarms and malfunctions of plant operations and takes the necessary corrective measures per the instruction of the Operations Manager
  • Assists in shutdown and start-up procedures during outages
  • Operates all plant equipment/systems within scope of job responsibility
  • Performs troubleshooting / verification of circuit de-energization of <130v AC or DC with proper training and RWA authorization
  • Participation in the Facility Confined Space Rescue Team is required
