About The Position

As a Consumer Safety Inspector with the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, you will ensure that regulated establishments produce safe products by executing appropriate inspection methods. Your responsibilities will include determining non-compliance with regulatory requirements, documenting non-compliance, and initiating enforcement actions when warranted. You will verify that meat and poultry slaughter and processing establishments' Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) Plans meet regulatory requirements. Additionally, you will review records, observe plant operations, and conduct hands-on verification to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, preparing detailed documentation of non-compliance. You will also conduct regulatory oversight activities, communicate with plant managers, and advise other inspectors on inspection and enforcement matters. Your role will involve conducting various samplings, surveys, and tests to obtain pertinent data on potential problem areas and ensuring that products approved for import comply with all applicable Federal regulations.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Training as a condition of employment is required.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination.
  • Must pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Ability to read, speak, write, and effectively communicate in English.
  • Physical and medical ability to perform essential job functions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a consumer safety inspector or in a similar role.
  • Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities.
  • Experience with Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts.
  • Familiarity with SSOP and HACCP principles and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct samplings, surveys, and tests for data on industry trends.
  • Perform health and safety verification sampling and tests.
  • Authorize entry of meat or poultry products into the country.
