About The Position

As a Consumer Safety Inspector with the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, you will ensure that regulated establishments produce safe products by executing appropriate inspection methods. Your responsibilities will include determining non-compliance with regulatory requirements, documenting non-compliance, and initiating enforcement actions when warranted. You will verify that meat and poultry slaughter and processing establishments' Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) Plans meet regulatory requirements. Additionally, you will conduct regulatory oversight activities, communicate with plant managers, and advise other inspectors on inspection and enforcement matters. Your role will also involve conducting various samplings, surveys, and tests to obtain pertinent data on potential problem areas and ensuring compliance with federal regulations governing the importation of meat and poultry products.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination.
  • Training as a condition of employment is required.
  • Must pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Ability to read, speak, write, and effectively communicate in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a consumer safety inspector or similar position.
  • Knowledge of properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities.
  • Experience with Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics and elementary statistical concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regulatory oversight activities related to consumer protections.
  • Communicate legal and regulatory requirements to plant managers and owners.
  • Work with individuals to resolve problems regarding food safety requirements.
  • Conduct samplings and tests for detection of specific microbes and contaminants.
  • Authorize entry of meat or poultry products that comply with federal regulations.
