About The Position

The Consumer Safety Inspector position involves ensuring that regulated establishments produce safe products by executing inspection methods, determining non-compliance with regulatory requirements, and initiating enforcement actions when necessary. The role requires verifying compliance with Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) Plans, conducting regulatory oversight activities, and communicating with plant management regarding food safety standards.

Requirements

  • Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
  • Time-In-Grade: One year at the next lower grade is required for consideration for the next higher grade.
  • Specialized experience in consumer safety inspection, food inspection, or similar roles is required.
  • Experience should encompass at least two of the following areas: sampling techniques, report writing, and maintaining effective personal contacts.
  • For GS-5: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04 level is required.
  • For GS-7: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05 level is required.
  • For GS-8: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07 level is required.
  • For GS-9: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-08 level is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in food safety programs and regulations.
  • Knowledge of HACCP principles and practices.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics and statistical methods for testing.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure regulated establishments produce safe products through appropriate inspection methods.
  • Determine non-compliance with regulatory requirements and document findings.
  • Initiate enforcement actions when warranted.
  • Verify compliance with SSOP and HACCP Plans.
  • Execute SSOP and HACCP Plans to prevent unsanitary conditions.
  • Review records and conduct hands-on verification of plant operations.
  • Prepare detailed documentation of non-compliance issues.
  • Assess plant corrective actions and determine regulatory control actions.
  • Conduct regulatory oversight activities related to consumer protections.
  • Communicate legal and regulatory requirements to plant managers and owners.
  • Advise Agency inspectors on inspection and enforcement matters.
  • Conduct samplings and tests for health and safety verification.
  • Authorize entry of compliant meat and poultry products and refuse non-compliant products.
