About The Position

Under the direction of the Manager or Supervisor, the Consumer Credit Officer is responsible for rendering credit decisions on all consumer loan products following established guidelines, and analyzing supporting documents, and communicating decisions to the branch or customer while complying with established lending regulations, Bank policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Level I: Associate’s degree from an accredited institution with major in business, finance, or a related field or equivalent work experience. Additional education and certification may be required for mortgage underwriters working with loans regulated by government agencies, such as the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). Minimum 0 - 2 years of experience in consumer lending or related work experience.
  • Level II: Associate’s degree from an accredited institution with major in business, finance, or a related field or equivalent work experience. Additional education and certification may be required for mortgage underwriters working with loans regulated by government agencies, such as the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). Minimum 3 - 5 years of experience in consumer lending, with demonstrated experience reviewing and rendering credit decisions on home equity lines of credit and other consumer products or equivalent work experience.
  • Level III Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with major in business, finance, or a related field or equivalent work experience. An Associate degree from an accredited institution in mortgage banking or financial service may substitute for up to two years of experience. Additional education and certification may be required for mortgage underwriters working with loans regulated by government agencies, such as the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). Minimum 5 - 7 years of experience in consumer lending, with emphasis on mortgage or home equity line of credit underwriting. Able to render decisions on more complex home equity lines of credit and other consumer products.
  • Level IV: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with major in business, finance, accounting, or a related field or equivalent work experience, mortgage or residential real estate lending preferred. Additional education and certification may be required for mortgage underwriters working with loans regulated by government agencies, such as the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). Minimum 7 or more years of experience in consumer lending, with emphasis on mortgage or home equity line of credit underwriting. Able to render decisions on more complex home equity lines of credit and other consumer products.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with personal computers in a networked environment and Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) or similar software.
  • Knowledge of or ability to use Bank software and systems, including proficiency with automated underwriting systems.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of consumer finance and accounting.
  • Must be detail oriented to ensure work is accurate and credit decisions are executed in compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Possess excellent research and decision making abilities.
  • Able to work effectively under deadline and volume pressures.
  • Must have the ability to work effectively in a team as well as lead teams.
  • Able to prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
  • Must have excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Able to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required.

  • Previous leadership experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Makes credit decisions on a wide variety of consumer direct loan products including Home Equity Lines of Credit in adherence to Bank Credit Policies and department procedures. Credit transaction identified as more complex and/or specialized are assigned to the Senior Consumer Credit Officer.
  • Investigates and validates application information, and utilizes supporting documents to render decisions. Credit decisions may include analysis of, but are not limited to the following: customer, bank or third party sources for income documentation such as personal and related business tax returns, personal and related business financial statements, other financial data, credit exposure, credit reports, real property appraisals, title and other property information.
  • Communicates lending decisions to customer and branch staff.
  • Exercises a higher level of individual lending authority than less senior Credit Officers for Direct Consumer Lending.
  • Trains less experienced staff and executes specialized lending programs as appropriate.
  • Exercises individual lending authority for Direct Consumer Lending and specialized lending programs as appropriate.
  • Ensures that lending decisions are sound, within authorized lending limits and in compliance with the Bank’s lending policies. This includes but is not limited to making decisions on loans within specified timeframes, from receipt of the application to final decision and through closing as applicable.
  • Makes recommendations for loan applications outside of lending authority to a higher level of lending authority for review and approval.
  • Maintains productivity and quality of service standards, as established by management, with respect to service level agreements for credit decisions and closing of credit transactions. This includes but is not limited to making decisions on loans within specified timeframes, from receipt of the application to final decision and through closing as applicable.
  • Recommends alternatives for operational and process efficiencies relating to the underwriting process as well as the end to end direct consumer lending process. Leads credit and/process related projects and sub-projects under the direction of the Manager.
  • Communicates lending decisions, requests for information and responses to inquiries courteously and proactively with internal retail/wholesale staff and external customers, Bank partners, etc. Must be able to articulate current policies, procedures and/or processes as they relate to specific direct consumer lending products with our lending partners.
  • Ensures adherence to federal regulatory requirements governing consumer credit.
  • Adheres to established department policies and procedures relative to the underwriting, approval and closing of consumer loans.
  • Actively stays abreast of changes in credit policies and lending guidelines and procedures, while being compliant with consumer regulations.
  • Performs all other miscellaneous responsibilities and duties as assigned.
  • As a Bank of Hawaii employee, you ensure (or assist with ensuring) compliance with applicable laws, regulations, regulatory requirements and Bank policies and procedures, including but not limited to those related to Fair Banking, Anti-Money Laundering laws and regulations, Bank Secrecy Act and USA PATRIOT Act.
