About The Position

The Consultant is responsible for the accurate, timely, and efficient auditing of electronic legal fee and expense invoices submitted by law firms and legal vendors. This role ensures invoices comply with established billing guidelines, UTBMS codes, and internal standards, while documenting and communicating adjustments clearly and professionally. The Consultant partners with internal business units and the Legal Bill Analysis Center of Excellence (LBACOE) to ensure billing accuracy, identify process improvements, and support high‑quality service delivery.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of legal billing processes and invoice auditing
  • Working knowledge of legal terminology and claims/legal matters (multi‑jurisdictional exposure preferred)
  • Familiarity with federal and/or state rules of civil procedure
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision after training
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to quickly learn electronic legal billing and auditing systems
  • Comfortable with common business math and professional telephone communication
  • Paralegal Certification or Bachelor’s Degree in a legal‑related discipline or equivalent relevant work experience
  • 1–3 years of experience in a legal services, legal billing, or legal auditing environment

  • Experience reviewing or auditing legal invoices preferred

Responsibilities

  • Review and audit electronic legal fee and expense invoices for accuracy, compliance, and adherence to billing guidelines
  • Validate correct use of UTBMS task, activity, and expense codes
  • Identify billing guideline violations and apply appropriate invoice adjustments
  • Document all adjustments with clear rationale and guideline references
  • Forward audited invoices through the required review and approval chain
  • Receive invoice assignments from Operations Support Specialists or self‑assign from intake queues
  • Communicate and calibrate with Legal Invoice Analysts and Quality Assurance Analysts
  • Provide feedback and guidance to internal business unit partners on LBA process issues and improvement opportunities
  • Work collaboratively across LBACOE and broader WK teams
  • Exercise sound judgment in evaluating legal fees, costs, and billing practices
  • Identify trends, inconsistencies, or risks within invoices and escalate as appropriate
  • Independently analyze issues and engage necessary resources to support decision‑making
