We’re seeking a Consultant, Product Development to join our Personal Lines Property team—a role designed for a strategic thinker who thrives on turning insights into action. In this newly created position, you’ll be at the forefront of competitive intelligence and product enhancement, blending data analysis, process management, and continuous improvement to elevate both customer and agent experiences. Your work will directly impact how we deliver value in a rapidly evolving market. Our work is essential to helping Nationwide build future capability to serve customer needs. Keeping existing products relevant and marketable and building new products takes research, critical thinking, practicality and collaboration. As a Consultant, you'll develop new personal or commercial insurance products and make enhancements to existing products. Your work will include designing, leading and implementing all aspects of project work plans, including planning, communication, execution and completion. Your work will focus on driving assigned product growth and profitability.

Requirements

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in data analysis.
  • Ability to translate insights into actionable recommendations that improve customer and agent experiences.
  • Knowledge of Property & Casualty insurance products, especially Personal Lines.
  • Experience in product development processes, competitive analysis, and vendor management.
  • Proficiency in Excel (advanced), and familiarity with tools like Power BI or Tableau for KPI monitoring.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work across multiple business units.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Analytics, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Undergraduate studies in insurance, actuarial science, mathematics, risk management, product management, finance, business administration or related field.
  • Six years of experience in personal/commercial lines insurance, financial services, marketing or communications including two years previous product management experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of property and casualty insurance product, analytical tools, telematics, core business functions, underwriting policies and practices, performance measurement techniques, and systems required.
  • Knowledge of related pricing, marketing, insurance models/contracts, and financial analysis vital.
  • Project management concepts and techniques; solid understanding of business terminology; business systems and data processing policies, practices and procedures.
  • Excellent relationship building skills.
  • Outstanding project management skills such as organization and planning, interaction, leadership and motivational techniques.
  • Strong negotiation skills and data quality/integrity problem solving skills.
  • Decision making skills for problem identification and selection of alternatives.
  • Verbal and written communication skills at all levels for technical personnel and customer contact.
  • Technical report preparation and formal presentation skills.
  • Operates effectively in an environment of goals, targeted dates and high workloads.
  • Adjusts schedule or work hours to meet changes in priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Masters’ of Business Administration degree preferred.
  • Insurance licenses or designations such as CPCU, ACAS, ARM, FLMI, NASD, Project Management Certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of business-related systems concepts and requirements preferred.
  • Managerial experience, including facilitation, resolution, delegation and mentoring preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Key Product Features: Own Service Line and Equipment Breakdown products—manage vendor relationships, monitor KPIs, and drive utilization strategies.
  • Serve as Property Product SME: Act as the go-to liaison for product questions/issues across Personal Lines business units and support enhancements from scoping through implementation.
  • Drive Competitive Intelligence: Research and respond to requests from Field Product, Product Development, Pricing, and other stakeholders to keep Nationwide ahead of the curve.
  • Champion Product Enhancements: Coordinate scoping, competitive analysis, recommendations, communication, and monitoring for prioritized initiatives.
  • Leads new business development and implementation projects.
  • Provides leadership to all functional areas related to product design and management.
  • Makes recommendations based on in-depth functional knowledge and opportunities for improvement.
  • Develops and implements strategic business rules that support business requirements.
  • Reviews pricing, design features and associated processes.
  • Partners with underwriting to develop standards and guidelines.
  • Develops and drives key initiatives related to growth and profitability.
  • Manages strategies related to multiple product growth and profitability objectives.
  • Coordinates product strategy with sales, agency management, field product and marketing.
  • Develops and controls timelines, including regularly re-assessing risks, throughout project life.
  • Revises project plans on an ongoing basis to maintain alignment with other projects and/or business strategy.
  • Leads the process of analyzing market information on competitors.
  • Proactively identifies product opportunities.
  • Leads the coordination, development and implementation of new product training.
  • Responsible for internal and external resource management, budgeting and cost containment.
  • Provides market analysis tools and global data to the regions.
  • Completes a national product analysis regarding performance, financial results, profitability, business mix and competition.
  • Designs forecasting models and functions as a technical specialist on product issues.
  • Communicates financial objectives and results.
  • Guides the exploration, sponsoring and evaluation process of new product performance tools and technology enhancements.
  • Accountable for the quality and effectiveness of rate change and system improvement implementations.
  • Coordinates process change improvements.
  • May provide input to appropriate functional areas to develop business specifications.
  • Leads the rate review, filing and communication process for new development initiatives.
  • Coordinates product recommended implementations.
  • Initiates action plans to improve and/or maintain product performance.
  • Ensures underwriting guidelines align with rate plan changes and corporate strategy.
  • Designs and implements state level product strategy and communication plans throughout the organization.
  • Assures effective communication to appropriate product leaders and functional areas of the organization.
  • Proactively seeks out opportunities to interact with other business partners while developing cross functional knowledge in claims, sales, marketing, pricing, operations, underwriting and finance.
  • Acts as a mentor to business partners.
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
