About The Position

Our Government Relations team are trusted experts who work with public officials and their staff to create a political and regulatory environment that protects our members and our company. We provide industry expertise that helps government leaders anticipate and solve our customers’ needs. We value the key role that all Nationwide associates play in election and policy efforts and work hard to keep them informed and engaged in the process. As a consultant, you'll lead Nationwide’s federal, state and local Political Action Committee (PAC) and Nationwide’s grassroots and political strategies and manage the Civic Action Program (CAP). This includes helping to develop campaign materials used to solicit contributions from our associates, researching candidates to make sure they align with PAC giving criteria and Nationwide’s culture and values and maintaining PAC compliance with required state and federal filings. We'll count on you to represent PAC and CAP at internal and external meetings and events.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate studies in political science, public relations, communications or other business related field preferred.
  • Typically, seven or more years of demonstrated ability in governmental relations, political action committee (PAC) management or political fundraising.
  • High degree of political acuity with a familiarity of federal and state government structure and workings.
  • Extensive knowledge of the political process including legislative initiatives, legislative and executive processes, legislative communication techniques and the dynamics of politics at all levels of government.
  • Acute political sensitivity and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Understanding of the science of influence and how to implement sales and marketing tactics to encourage PAC participation.
  • Ability to work comfortably and effectively with top-level government officials, association leaders and senior executives.
  • Excellent presentation, interpersonal communication and public speaking skills.
  • Proven critical thinking skills and able to develop new and creative ideas.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail to adhere to tight requirements and timelines.
  • Database and website content management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, including Excel and Word.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fundraising and/or sales, with proven results, influencing and achieving fundraising/sales goals strongly preferred.
  • Experience with elected officials at the federal and/or state level, political campaigns, campaign finance, PAC administration and/or corporate political engagement activities strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with Director, Political Programs, Senior Vice President, Government Relations, and business leaders to develop political fundraising strategy.
  • Implements fundraising programs to increase PAC revenues.
  • Creates and implements education and communication materials related to PAC (e.g., campaign strategy and video, presentations, documents, solicitation materials and website copy).
  • Coordinates and handles logistics for exclusive PAC events across the country – both virtual and in person.
  • Helps train and organize PAC Ambassadors across the company.
  • Presents at meetings and travels to regional office locations to educate associates on importance and value of PAC.
  • Manages and builds PAC member participation and member retention.
  • Develops and implements new fundraising tactics, such as member benefit events, new giving levels and incentives and member appreciation campaigns.
  • Collaborates closely with broader government relations events to support the education of Nationwide associates on the value of political engagement while building and maintaining a positive brand for PAC.
  • Administers PAC, ensuring compliance with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and all state registration and campaign finance reporting requirements.
  • Reviews filings with the FEC and state campaign offices.
  • Maintains solid understanding of campaign finance law, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations and the Security Exchange Commission (SEC) pay-to-play regulations to ensure Nationwide’s compliance.
  • Collaborates on broad External Affairs events and initiatives to educate Nationwide associates on the value of political engagement.
  • Coordinates get-out-the-vote efforts and strategies and assists with voter education efforts in all Nationwide locations.
  • Crafts and distributes calls to action to Nationwide associates on federal and state legislative issues.
  • Work with Nationwide key contacts to lobby elected officials.
  • Develops and leads grassroots tactics to influence legislative and regulatory issues facing Congress, state legislatures and state and local ballot initiatives.
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
