About The Position

Under the supervision of the Landscape Construction Foreman or Foreman to whom assigned, the Construction Workman is responsible for: Construction of retaining walls, concrete walkways, installing and repairing playgrounds, working on zoo exhibits and repairing drainage ways. Maintenance, repair and snow removal of roadways and parking lots. Working with other parks division maintenance crews on an as needed basis. Mains the cleanliness and safety of work area and assigned vehicle. Must daily wear a clean Park District designated uniform while on the job. Assisting with setup and tear-down of special events. Moving and setting up the portable stage. Following all safety procedures that pertain to the duties performed. Supports all aspects of the Park District's safety program. Performing other related duties as assigned. Pay Scale: Apprentice Rate: $24.01 per hour; After 3 months, base pay: $30.01 per hour. Maximum pay rate is $32.01 per hour.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Basic knowledge of construction work.
  • Able to operate or learn to operate construction equipment, for example: skid steer, backhoe.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Aptitude for on-the-job training.
  • Requires valid Illinois State “Class A CDL” Driver’s License.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with other park district employees.
  • Ability to be professional, respectful, accountable, innovative, to follow safety procedures, and be equitable to both internal and external customers.
  • Work record that shows reliability, initiative and a courteous manner.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to reach, pull, walk, squat, kneel and bend at the waist and knees.
  • Ability to operate machinery related to job duties.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle weighing 10 tons.

  • Experience in the construction field is desirable.
