About The Position

The City of Vestavia Hills is seeking a Construction Worker to perform work that involves general or specialized duties in construction and maintenance of bridges, culverts, large pipe installation, cast in place concrete construction and other constructions projects. Work entails the use of pre-cast box culverts and pre-cast wings in the construction of bridges and culverts. Work assignments are received in the form of specific instruction pertaining to desired results and work safety methods. Employees in this classification receive continuing or individual assignments by the supervisor generally indicating work to be done, limitations, quality and quantity expected, deadlines, and priority of assignments. Employees are given additional specific instructions for new, difficult, or unusual assignments by the supervisor. Employees use initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instructions. Work is reviewed by observation of results obtained through on-site inspection by an inspector; the supervisor assures that the work is technically accurate and in compliance with instructions, established procedures, and guidelines.

Requirements

  • Work experience pouring and finishing concrete (e.g., sidewalks, curb and gutter, slabs).
  • Work experience using hand tools and power tools to build vertical and horizontal forms for concrete work.
  • Work experience laying masonry (e.g., mixing mortor, laying brick and/or block).

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a Class B CDL.
  • Experience with concrete slipform equipment and processes (e.g., preparing the site, pouring and vibration, finishing and curing the concrete).
  • Experience with commercial concrete structural projects. (e.g., foundations, large slabs, walls, and/or columns).
  • Experience in assigning, monitoring, and/or reviewing the work of coworkers or crew.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the layout, construction, and maintenance of bridges and box culverts by directing the use of power tools, construction equipment, and concrete work in order to ensure safe roadways and properly channel the flow of water under roadways.
  • Leads the building, erection, and removal of wooden forms made of plywood, 2x4’s, or other form types by directing the use of tools such as hammers, power saws, tape measures, levels, and framing squares in order to prepare for precise concrete pours.
  • Leads the fabrication of steel cages to be placed inside forms in order to reinforce and stabilize concrete structures.
  • Leads the mixing, pouring, and finishing of concrete to construct a variety of structures (e.g., wing walls, head walls, sidewalks, driveways, slabs, retaining walls, building foundations, curbs and gutters, and drop-inlets) in order to complete construction projects to specification.
  • Participates and assists in the installation of guardrails by following Department of Transportation guidelines and project specifications, using hand tools, power tools, and guardrail components in order to enhance highway safety.
  • Maintains a safe work environment by consistently wearing appropriate protective equipment and adhering to established safety guidelines in order to ensure the safety of personnel, the public, and equipment.
  • Constructs brick and concrete block headwalls by preparing footings, mixing mortar, and laying masonry to prevent erosion around pipes, stabilize banks, and hold backfill around culverts or cross drains.
  • Acts as a lead worker of peer or support staff by assigning and reviewing work tasks, facilitating training, and providing feedback using policies, procedures, tools, and directives from management in order to ensure tasks are completed in accordance with established requirements.
