About The Position

Under general supervision, performs both routine and skilled heavy, physical work in the construction, maintenance, repair, and operation of water distribution systems, sewer collection systems, reclaimed water systems, and related structures and appurtenances; operates a variety of hand and power tools; performs related duties as required. Construction Worker I is the entry level class in this series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in the construction and repair of water distribution systems, sewer collection systems, reclaimed water systems, and related structures and appurtenances. Construction Worker II is the journey level class in this series with incumbents performing the full range of construction, maintenance, and operation duties; may guide less experienced staff at job sites in the absence of supervisor or lead worker. This position is distinguished from the Senior Construction Worker, which performs more heavy equipment operations and serves as crew lead.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Water or wastewater technology education desirable.
  • Construction Worker I: one year of work experience as a laborer in construction related work.
  • Construction Worker II: two years of experience in the construction and maintenance of water distribution systems at a level equivalent to the District's Construction Worker I class.
  • Possession of a California Class B license with Tanker Endorsement within 6 months of date of hire for Construction Worker I.
  • A State Water Resource Control Board (SWRCB) Water Distribution Grade 1 (D1) highly preferred for Construction Worker I.
  • Possession of a California SWRCB Water Distribution Grade 2 (D2) for Construction Worker II.
  • Possession of a Class A California driver's license with Tanker Endorsement for Construction Worker II.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs water distribution systems, sewer collection systems, and reclaimed water systems including pipelines, taps, laterals, valves, meter services, fire hydrants, and related appurtenances and structures.
  • Exercises valves and performs system shutdowns.
  • Performs construction and maintenance work on District buildings and facilities as assigned.
  • Excavates, shores, and backfills trenches.
  • Cuts, patches, repairs, and resurfaces streets.
  • Cleans up work sites.
  • Installs, raises, and lowers valve cans to grade.
  • Observes safe work methods and safety practices related to the work.
  • Cones and flags work sites to secure from traffic.
  • Uses appropriate safety equipment.
  • Researches materials and parts.
  • Creates work orders utilizing CMMS.
  • Inputs and maintains accurate records and logs, using appropriate computer software.
  • Inspects vehicles and performs minor maintenance.
  • Reports the need for major repairs and service.
  • Fuels and lubricates vehicles and related equipment.
  • Operates assigned vehicles skillfully and safely.
  • Observes safe driving practices.
  • Operates and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work assignments.
  • Reads and interprets maps, schematics, plans, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Records basic information related to work performed.
  • Collects and enters data into computer system.
  • May train and direct the work of others; may act in a lead capacity on specific jobs.
  • Responds to emergency situations during off-hours as required.
  • Stands duty on a rotational basis and may work outside of regular work hours as necessary, including weekends and holidays.
  • Required to respond within 30-minute time frame to District boundaries when on duty status.
  • Operates copiers and a variety of office equipment.
  • Performs duties in a professional manner and works well with others or in a team setting.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Regular attendance and adherence to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.
  • Observes safe work practices and safety methods.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Salary range for Construction Worker I: $59,809 - $80,148 annual.
  • Salary range for Construction Worker II: $69,234 - $92,782 annual.
