The Role The Construction Safety Specialist works with the various departments within the organization in support of AvalonBay’s Corporate Safety and Health program to ensure compliance with municipal, state, and federal safety and health regulations. While assigned to a particular community, or business unit, the Senior Safety Engineer can provide additional support to additional areas within the organization as needed. The Construction Safety Specialist identifies, manages, and works to create solutions for hazardous conditions that may lead to injury, illnesses, exposures, and/or property damage. This role supports all functions that are relevant to Safety and Health.

Requirements

  • Experience: 3-7 years of Safety, or related experience.
  • Education: HS Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Ability to learn, understand, and apply knowledge of safety and health principles including the ability to identify known potential exposures and recommended corrective actions.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft Office suite programs, internet inquiries, email, and regulatory websites.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly (both verbal and written).
  • Possesses working knowledge of OSHA Safety and Health regulations, national consensus standards, and municipal and state regulations governing safety and health.
  • Performance of the required duties requires physical ability to climb permanent and temporary stairs, ability to climb ladders and negotiate work areas.
  • Requires use of hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Exhibits the ability to frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb (stairs, ladders, etc.).
  • Exhibits the ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE); including head protection, face protection, safety glasses, gloves, protective footwear, vest, and respiratory protection.
  • Candidate regularly works on-site at a community or regional office.
  • Travel may be required between multiple locations.
  • OSHA 30, or willing to obtain OSHA 30 within 90 days of employment.
  • CPR/First Aid or willing to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • Satisfactory completion of AVB’s new hire orientation within 30 days of employment or the first training session offered after employment.
  • Any other applicable training assigned by the Manager or Director.

Nice To Haves

  • (Bi-Lingual, and field related certifications are a plus)
  • BCSP certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors work to ensure compliance with AvalonBay safety and health policies, programs, procedures, and all municipal, state, and federal regulations. Conducts and documents the organization’s safety program inspections, and inspections required by local regulations. 47.5%
  • Builds working relationships with associates, vendors, and/or contractors to foster a positive Safety culture while ensuring compliance with AvalonBay policies, and applicable safety regulations. 13.5%
  • Ceases work when there is an immediate danger to life and health condition (IDLH). Works with AvalonBay associates and vendor, or contractor staff to correct IDLH conditions. 5%
  • Ensures corrective action(s) for non-compliant conditions and tracks corrective measures until completion. 5%
  • Investigates safety and health concerns, and incidents, while ensuring that necessary information is provided to the organization. 5%
  • Reviews safety and health submittals and provides recommendations to improve written plans and documents. 5%
  • Analyzes Safety and incident data to identify trends. Uses information to make recommendations for improvement. 5%
  • Educates and shares information related to Safety policies and procedures with team members. Conducts training on relevant Safety topics, as necessary. 5%
  • Assists Safety Department, and the organization, with overall program improvement and implementation. 5%
  • Proactive risk management mindset and anticipation techniques.
  • All other tasks as assigned by the manager.
