About The Position

The position involves monitoring and documenting the work of contractors on a daily basis through electronic Inspection Daily Reports. The role requires coordinating the contractor's work with the activities and responsibilities of the Client. A full-time, detailed inspection of all construction work is necessary to ensure quality workmanship in accordance with contract requirements. The inspection services include checking construction contractor stakeout and grades, erosion and sediment control compliance, maintenance of traffic, utility coordination, and locating existing facilities as needed. Additional responsibilities include calculating quantities, inspecting onsite materials, conducting sampling and materials testing, performing soil, aggregate, and hot mix asphalt compaction tests, and taking final measurements of completed work. The position also requires maintaining organized records of contract items and quantities completed by construction contractors, reviewing safety programs, and making recommendations for corrective actions when necessary.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in highway construction management including oversight of inspection staff.
  • Construction inspection experience in erosion & sediment control, earthwork operations, construction in/around flowing streams, storm drainage systems, and HMA paving.
  • Working skill in operating computer equipment, software programs, and device skills for working in the MDOT e-Construction environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret project plans and contract specifications.
  • Ability to prepare simple drawings, detailed reports, and maintain project records.
  • Effective communication skills both orally and in writing with agency and contractor personnel and the general public.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Locate existing facilities utilities as needed.
  • Calculate quantities and inspect onsite materials.
  • Conduct sampling and materials testing, including soil, aggregate, and hot mix asphalt compaction tests.
  • Take final measurements of the completed work.
  • Maintain neat, accurate, and organized records of contract items and quantities completed by the construction contractors.
  • Review the safety programs of contractors and make recommendations for corrective action.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
