About The Position

Brown and Caldwell is seeking a Construction Engineer with experience in construction inspection or management of infrastructure construction projects (highway/sewer/water). This role is an essential member of the overall project delivery team and will have high visibility within all phases of the project life cycle. This role will support many aspects of the project while developing the necessary management skills required to engage in greater project leadership within the organization. The candidate will require effective communication skills and knowledge of the engineering, construction and commissioning phases of projects utilizing both design build and traditional project delivery platforms. The effective execution of this role will include support of both senior project management as well as field construction delivery forces. This position will be based at both regional offices and field sites during the execution of their respective role. Candidates with engineering background with ability to be involved with design as well as construction services would be highly desired.

Requirements

  • BS in engineering or construction management, environmental/civil engineering, or related discipline required.
  • EIT or CMIT required, ability to obtain PE in the state of NYC within 2 years preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years' professional related experience, preferably with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.
  • Proven field experience in coordination of the primary responsibilities essential to the position as stated above.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Proven track record of successfully supporting construction inspection or management of infrastructure construction projects.
  • Excellent computer skills and the use of software including but not limited to Excel, Word, Primavera Tools, AutoCAD and database management tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in the implementation of the daily execution of key functions while coordinating with engineering, field management and building trade staff.
  • Knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations, implementation, and guidance.
  • Ability to travel to work sites regionally at least 50% of the time and ability to accommodate overnight stays on occasion.
  • Ability to walk around a construction site of varying size and topography to perform inspections and ability to stand for several hours observing and documenting critical construction activities.
  • Ability to climb stairs (2-3 flights) or ladders (up to 24 foot typically) to access structure for visual inspection and ability to lift objects on job sites less than 30 pounds.
  • Ability to perform field work in adverse conditions (temperatures, precipitation, wind) as needed.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective safety equipment at sites including hard hats, safety-toe boots, eye-protection, safety vest, and gloves.

Responsibilities

  • Perform construction management oversight and administration tasks, including supporting the Construction Manager, Quality Manager, Project Controls Manager, Resident Engineers, Safety Professionals, and Inspectors as needed.
  • Review and become familiar with the project contract requirements (scope of work) and project schedule.
  • Conduct reviews of the files for required paperwork including, but not limited to staff inspections, schedules, sampling data, amendments and certifications.
  • Review and analyze contractor's schedule along with interpreting project plans and specifications for local codes.
  • Investigate/research engineering and construction issues to determine potential solutions and associated cost/schedule/performance ramifications.
  • Expedite submittal and RFI responses, including technical and administrative functions.
  • Coordinate in the field with clients/owners, consultants, contractors, designers and regulatory agencies.
  • Monitor construction progress in accordance with approved submittals and contract requirements. Prepare daily reports documenting weather, equipment, manpower, and construction activities; and daily progress photos.
  • Assist the CM/RE in review of Contractors' monthly pencil copy of payment requests verifying appropriateness of actual work completed and completeness of documentation provided.
  • Review and provide input on potential change order issues.
  • Assist the CM/RE in development, compilation, and submission of project monthly reporting documents.
  • Maintain project records (final record documents, red-line drawings, photographic records) required for project close-out.
  • Comply with company and client, health and safety training requirements.
