About The Position

The Construction Manager is responsible for planning and execution for designated projects within the Generation and Transmission Major Projects organization. Projects managed by this organization typically range from ~$5M to $500M in total spend. This team performs large and complex projects or engineering studies for NIPSCO which includes projects supporting electric generation, electric transmission, environmental remediation, and other scopes of work of larger size or with higher complexity. Projects are typically first of their kind for NIPSCO and almost always multi-year.

Requirements

  • 9+ years’ experience managing heavy industrial construction related projects
  • Strong planning, organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer software systems, including Microsoft Office 365, project scheduling and tracking tools, and iOS (Apple iPad).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and perform effectively under stringent deadlines and schedules.
  • Proven ability to work closely with field crews and resolve issues collaboratively.
  • Ability to work in environments involving high noise, dust, extreme temperatures, confined spaces, and chemical hazards.
  • Proficiency in applying construction principles and techniques.
  • Ability to foster teamwork and motivate participation.
  • Experience with public speaking, presentations, and communication with diverse audiences.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Working knowledge of budgeting, scheduling, and capital project estimating practices.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Advanced spreadsheet skills for budgeting and financial analysis.
  • Working knowledge of financial and business practices in a competitive environment.
  • In-depth project management knowledge gained through PMP training.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Estimating experience in a large industrial environment.
  • Working knowledge of the NIPSCO Asset Management Process.
  • 4+ years' experience working with utility construction contractors
  • Knowledge of electric line and substation construction processes.

Responsibilities

  • Works across internal departments supporting Generation and Transmission Major Projects.
  • Enforce OSHA, NWIBRT, and NIPSCO Life Saving Rules and safety requirements.
  • Coordinate with external construction firms, contractors, equipment and system vendors, and other project stakeholders to execute capital projects.
  • Work with external trade unions to understand labor workforce requirements and rules.
  • Apply working knowledge of National Maintenance Agreement (NMA) policies.
  • Define and manage resources required to complete assigned projects.
  • Ensure compliance with construction and engineering standards and applicable codes.
  • Participate in business planning and asset management processes (ICPP, FAM) to maximize asset utilization.
  • Provide timely, relevant, and quantifiable information to project managers and department leaders to support balanced decision-making related to project risks and execution.
  • Maintain awareness of industry, regulatory, and economic conditions to align construction activities with corporate strategies.
  • Demonstrate leadership to promote and sustain a safe work environment.
  • Support Project Management and Major Projects as directed.
  • Provide system support during storms or other system emergencies.
