The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is accepting online applications for a Construction Inspector in the Public Works department. The employee p erforms difficult technical and intermediate professional work providing field management and inspecting various public works and public utility projects for compliance with local codes and zoning ordinances; does related work as required. Under general supervision performs considerable field work in routine enforcement through inspection of various public works and public utilities projects under construction, repair or alteration to determine and secure compliance with all municipal codes and ordinances. The work involves examination and the application of standard trade practices to inspection work, i.e., performing density, water pressure, and wastewater tests. Position is responsible for various reports relevant to tasks completed and in process. Inspections are conducted independently, but in accordance with departmental regulations and established technical standards. Supervision is received through oral and written instructions and work review is through reports submitted. Essential Functions of Position: consults with various entities involved in construction, alteration, and repair of public works and utility projects, i.e., contractors, and street/highway, maintenance, and utilities departments, makes on-sight surveys and inspections of public utility and public works projects; inspects projects in the course of construction, alteration and repair as frequently as necessary for conformance to established regulations, i.e., in easements, drainage, water/wastewater line placement; examines project plans to determine conformance to applicable codes and ordinances; discusses construction, alteration and repair with contractor, property owners and other interested parties, explaining and interpreting regulations where necessary; informs appropriate entities of violations and methods of correcting violations according to applicable ordinances and past precedents under the supervisor's direction; prepares reports of inspections performed covering conditions found, actions taken and recommendations made for further action; reviews site plans and subdivision plans for compliance with codes, regulations and standards; submits list of plan deficiencies, discusses deficiencies with designers and developers; performs related tasks as required.
