About The Position

The Construction Inspector II performs work of moderate to considerable difficulty, ensuring compliance with specifications and codes at various construction projects. This role involves field checks of as-built plans, on-site inspections, and the development of payment applications. The inspector communicates with contractors regarding discrepancies and ensures that all construction is completed according to contract requirements. Responsibilities also include materials testing, surveying, maintaining project records, and preparing reports. The inspector may also oversee and train junior inspectors and participate in project management activities.

Requirements

  • Experience inspecting construction work activities with increasing responsibility.
  • High school diploma or GED with significant experience in engineering, architecture, or skilled craft in construction.
  • Must possess OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification or obtain within 3 months of hire.
  • Working knowledge of basic mathematics including algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric computations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and other specialized equipment.
  • Knowledge of construction and inspection materials, methods, and tools.
  • Ability to implement quality control procedures and track project schedules.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to utilize surveying and measurement tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification(s) from ACI Field Tech, VDOT Intermediate Work Zone, or VDOT Soils and Aggregate.
  • Experience in highways, bridges, streets, traffic control, or sign installation projects.

Responsibilities

  • Performs field checks of all 'red-line' as-built plans to assure completeness of the plans.
  • Conducts on-site field compliance inspections, quality assurance, and progress monitoring at various construction projects.
  • Develops payment applications.
  • Ensures maintenance and new construction comply with contracts, plans, specifications, approved shop drawings, and permit requirements.
  • Communicates with and advises contractors of discrepancies and necessary actions.
  • Performs required materials testing.
  • Conducts basic to moderate surveying and necessary measurements.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with agency, contractor, and MBP personnel.
  • Performs final inspections, prepares punchlists, and ensures completion of items on the punchlist.
  • Maintains project records including daily diaries, construction workforce, equipment, materials records, and project photos.
  • Tracks submittals and requests for information.
  • Performs various administrative duties required of MBP team members.
  • Inspects signing projects or other special projects as assigned.
  • Researches proper inspection and construction methods.
  • Reviews performance and assists in the oversight, training, and development of junior inspectors.
  • Prepares and checks construction project reports and monthly estimates.
  • Monitors project budget and schedules.
  • Assists in contractor’s monthly evaluations.
  • Provides customer service to the public and project stakeholders.
  • Performs various administrative duties including daily timesheets and monthly reports.
