About The Position

This posting is for an Engineering Technician II in the Smithfield Construction Office. •This position serves as a project inspector on roadway and structure projects supporting higher level technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts and/or District Office duties. •This position you will be responsible for monitoring the contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications. •Your duties will include but are not limited to observing and documenting the contractor’s operations, making measurements and calculations of pay quantities, and performing standardized material sampling and testing. The selected employee must be proficient in record keeping. •In this position you may be required to coordinate reviews of technical plans and drawings relating to driveway permit applications, utility encroachment requests, subdivision design standards, and road addition packages. •In this position you must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing. •You will be expected to either work independently or as part of a larger team of NCDOT employees and consultant inspectors. •In this position you will ensure compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. •Daily duties will include keeping daily inspector diaries on project operations, completing various material reports including materials received, documenting pay records, performing construction calculations, and computer/iPad data and record entry. •This employee will be expected to communicate effectively with co-workers, contractors, and the general public. They will be expected to apply math skills such as basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Knowledge and skill in the use of Microsoft Office suite products, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is required. Must have the ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment. This employee will be expected to apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations. Experience with iPads/tablets, HiCAMS, and Shareplus/Sharepoint is highly preferred. The employee may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic. The selected employee will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions and will be expected to perform moderate physical activity such as standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and be able to lift 50 pounds. This position may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required by project workload/staffing requirements on any assigned project in Division 4. Must be able to legally operate a state vehicle. Safety toe shoes are required. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing.

  • Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in conducting routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standards/codes, and specifications
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
  • Experience reading/interpreting construction plans, standards and specifications
  • Experience performing mathematical functions including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
  • Experience in maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad date entry
  • Experience with iPads/tablets, HiCAMS, and Shareplus/Sharepoint is highly preferred.
