About The Position

Under general direction, observes progress of construction projects on site and helps assure that they are completed according to design drawings and specifications. Prepares daily reports on the condition and progress of construction projects. Assists in resolving construction associated problems. Reports activities to supervisors.

Requirements

  • Completion of at least two (2) years of college level technical architectural and engineering coursework supplemented by four (4) years of progressively responsible experience performing construction engineering field work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required.
  • must maintain valid State of Illinois driver's license throughout employment.
  • Thorough knowledge of state, City of Chicago and Chicago Park District construction codes and ordinances.
  • General knowledge of all aspects of architecture, landscape architecture and engineering construction work including electrical, HVAC, plumbing and structural.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to resolve construction disputes.
  • Mathematics aptitude and writing skills necessary to complete daily and monthly reports/payments.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Ability to interpret designer’s drawings and contract construction documents.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects construction materials and work of construction projects.
  • Verifies compliance with designers' drawings and specifications including measurements, construction materials and methods, material storage methods, slump and cylinder tests to determine appropriateness of concrete mixtures and compression, and all other conditions outlined in the construction contract.
  • May inspect contractors work as well as that of Chicago Park District projects.
  • Prepares daily and monthly reports which include but are not limited to the following information: quality of work, size of work force, materials received and approximate quantities, work accomplished including starting and ending dates, materials rejected, anticipated overruns, and related information.
  • Assists in resolving questions between contractors and/or tradespeople and designers.
  • Suspends work or stops deliveries of materials due to poor weather conditions or plans and specifications not being followed.
  • Contacts supervisor as necessary.
  • Reports poor construction results and dangerous and unreasonable construction methods to supervisor. Approves contractor payments based upon quality and progress of construction projects.
  • Assists in the preparation of change orders.
  • May review projects for compliance with MBE/WBE requirements.
