About The Position

Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and/or complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Construction Inspector I: No experience required.
  • Construction Inspector II: 1 YEAR construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support-related experience.
  • Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent. Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Considerable knowledge of: Applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments
  • Considerable knowledge of: Applicable testing methods, processes and procedures
  • Considerable knowledge of: Basic traffic management and control procedures
  • Considerable knowledge of: The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Considerable knowledge of: Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Considerable knowledge of: Applicable laws, rules, and regulations
  • Considerable knowledge of: Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules and regulations
  • Some knowledge of: Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Some knowledge of: Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Some knowledge of: Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Extensive knowledge of: Methods for reviewing plans and specifications for compliance with requirements
  • Extensive knowledge of: Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
  • Extensive knowledge of: Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Responsibilities

  • Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
  • Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.
  • Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
  • Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades; as required moves traffic control devices and barricades.
  • Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
  • Prepares monthly and final estimates.
  • Observes and inspects ongoing fabrication processes of structural steel bridge girders, pre-stressed concrete bridge girders and other structural components.
  • Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Conducts project reviews and coordinates inspections with various inspectors and other district/division project managers.
  • Serves as a lead worker or project leader.
  • Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
