About The Position

Infrastructure Engineering Inc. (IEI) Chicago Office is seeking a Construction Field Inspector (Rail) for a project-based opportunity. IEI is a leading civil engineering firm known for quality and responsiveness. In this role, the Construction Field Inspector will collaborate closely with the Construction Manager, providing daily construction oversight in the field, assisting with documentation, coordination, and quality assurance. This position is crucial for the safe and efficient delivery of complex infrastructure projects. The inspector will oversee contractors' daily activities and the work of junior inspectors, and work with public agencies to modernize transportation systems across the region. Requirements

  • Must have 3-5 years of experience in construction including transit, support of excavation, utilities, roadway, highway and/or bridge construction experience.
  • NICET III/NICET IV Certification.
  • Ability to effectively make decisions concerning work in progress, solving field and office problems, and supervise others.
  • Ability to read, to analyze, and to interpret complex technical documents.
  • Extensive knowledge of standards, specifications, physical characteristics and properties of roadway, structures, drainage and utility systems construction materials, and the approved methods and equipment used in making physical tests of construction materials.
  • Skilled in detecting discrepancies in plans, materials, and construction methods and processes, and in implementing appropriate corrective action.
  • Skilled in planning and scheduling inspection activities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic knowledge of project management or field reporting software [Trimble Unity Construct (formerly e-Builder), Share Point, and Bluebeam] is required.
  • Uses initiative and exercise independent judgment; draws valid conclusions and project consequences of decisions and recommendations; meets deadlines.
  • A Valid Drivers’ License is required.
  • A personal vehicle to travel to the project different site locations may be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or construction management is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes responsibility of administering portions of the contract, which include maintaining records for potential change orders, claims, and as-built documentation.
  • Coordinates, inspects, reviews, and affirms results of tests on construction materials such as concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and soils.
  • Performs the full range of duties assigned, including skilled construction inspection, with authority and higher levels of technical education and training.
  • Engages in direct client contact, arranges job progress meetings, conducts material testing, performs complex construction inspections, notifies Resident Engineer or Construction Manager of problems and deviations, and offers solutions for unexpected issues.
  • Ensures construction materials are acquired from approved sources.
  • Ensures that contractor applies the Occupational Health and Safety Act and adheres to environmental and Waste Management requirements.
  • Works independently exercising judgment and initiative.
  • Inspects and approves maintenance of traffic including lane closures.
  • Inspects deep excavation and underground structures.
  • Keeps the Resident Engineer informed of conditions which could result in contract change orders and/or delays and assists in proactively resolving these situations.
  • Maintains an awareness of safety and health requirements and assures compliance of applicable regulations and contract provisions for the protection of the public and construction project personnel.
  • Observes work in all stages of progress to ensure conformance with standards, safety and other applicable regulations and contract requirements; assesses construction methods against industry standards; reviews workmanship and sequence of operations; monitors project schedules.
  • Responsible for overseeing daily activities of the inspection personnel and ensuring they complete detailed and thorough daily activity reports; accepting or rejecting the contractor’s work.
  • Reviews and comments on standards, plans, specifications, special provisions, manufacturers’ material specification, applicable regulations, and technical and constructability issues.
  • Supervises/performs quality assurance inspections to achieve compliance with contract plan and specifications on all phases of treatment facility, highway and bridge construction.
