The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform responsible skilled work in the operation of heavy construction equipment used in construction and maintenance activities in the Maintenance and Engineering (Landfill) Departments. Employees in this class will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment involved in construction and maintenance activities. Normal work is performed on one or two specific pieces of equipment; however, employee may be required to operate other types of equipment for special projects and during slack or seasonal periods. Work responsibilities include operating various pieces of heavy equipment such as a track excavator, backhoe, lowboy tractor trailer, bulldozer, motor-grader, tack truck, asphalt spreader, steel wheel roller, vacuum jet rodder, dump truck, trash compactor, scraper (pan), and/or front-end loader; servicing and performing routine preventive maintenance and safety checks on assigned heavy equipment; supervising a work crew performing skilled, semiskilled and laborer duties; and contributing to the department objectives by accepting additional assignments and performing additional duties and referred tasks. The Construction Equipment Operator position differs from the Heavy Equipment Operator II position in that the Construction Equipment Operator position requires comprehensive knowledge of and a higher level of skill in the operation of several different pieces of heavy equipment. Employees at the Maintenance Department report to the Construction Equipment Supervisor and employees at the Engineering Department (Landfill) report to the Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent and/or the Solid Waste Superintendent.
