About The Position

Our assignments include construction engineering and administration for highway and bridge projects in both rural and urban environments. TRC's Construction and Engineering and Inspection sector is looking to hire a Construction Engineer Inspector in various parts of NC including Raleigh, Greensboro and Charlotte.

Requirements

  • 2 or more years of transportation construction project technical/management experience.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from a school with ABET accredited program preferred.
  • Relevant NCDOT certifications required.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect roadway, bridge, utility, and/or infrastructure construction projects to ensure compliance with contract documents, plans, specifications, and applicable codes.
  • Verify contractor workmanship and material compliance with DOT and project requirements.
  • Perform field measurements and calculations for pay estimates.
  • Maintain daily inspection reports, including quantities, weather conditions, contractor activities, labor and equipment usage.
  • Use NCDOT systems (like HiCAMS or eConstruction) to enter data, document progress, and track materials.
  • Submit clear, organized reports with photos, test results, and findings.
  • Monitor and test construction materials (concrete, asphalt, soils) following NCDOT or AASHTO/ASTM standards.
  • Coordinate with labs and testing personnel; review test results for conformance.
  • Ensure safety and environmental compliance on the job site.
  • Communicate with contractors, subcontractors, and field personnel regarding plans, deviations, and schedule.
  • Identify deficiencies or non-conformances and coordinate corrective actions.
  • Attend pre-construction meetings and progress meetings.
  • Liaise with NDOT engineers, municipalities, and project stakeholders.
  • Provide updates to project managers and resident engineers.
  • Assist in resolving field issues and construction conflicts.
  • Monitor job site safety in accordance with OSHA and project-specific safety plans.
  • Report unsafe conditions or practices promptly.
  • Assist in processing change orders, claims, and contractor submittals.
  • Verify invoices and contractor payment applications based on measured work.
