About The Position

Max Rieke & Brothers, Inc. is a premier heavy civil construction company based in Shawnee, Kansas. We are seeking a sophisticated Controller who understands the unique financial landscape of heavy-highway and utility construction to oversee our financial operations and support our continued growth. The Controller will manage all financial aspects of our heavy civil operations. This role goes beyond general accounting, requiring a deep understanding of unit-price contracting, equipment cost recovery, and the Percentage of Completion (POC) method. You will be responsible for managing complex job costing, KDOT and MoDOT compliance, and the integration of field-to-office data. The Controller acts as a strategic partner to the executive team and works closely with our outside CPA firm. Direct experience with Foundation accounting software and the HCSS suite (HeavyJob/HeavyBid) is highly preferred.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA designation is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role within the heavy civil or highway construction industry.
  • Expertise in construction-specific financial reporting, including POC accounting and job cost analysis.
  • Proven proficiency in Foundation accounting software and HCSS (HeavyJob/HeavyBid) is highly desired.
  • Strong knowledge of KDOT/MoDOT compliance and public works contracting requirements.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial data into actionable operational insights.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger management for multi-million dollar heavy civil projects.
  • Manage the work-in-progress (WIP) reporting process, providing accurate analysis of over/under billings and revenue recognition.
  • Direct project controls for unit-price and lump-sum contracts, including AIA billings, T&M tracking, and RFC/change order management.
  • Ensure strict compliance with KDOT and MoDOT regulations, including Davis-Bacon/Certified Payroll requirements and EEO reporting.
  • Monitor heavy equipment life-cycles, calculating internal rental rates and analyzing fuel consumption, maintenance costs, and depreciation to optimize fleet ROI.
  • Administer the lien waiver process, bonding capacity, insurance renewals, and certificates of insurance for vendors and subcontractors.
  • Optimize ERP and accounting software integrations (Foundation and HCSS) to ensure seamless data flow between project sites and the home office.
  • Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for financial reporting and administrative workflows to streamline business processes.
  • Coordinate the preparation of all required tax filings and year-end financial statements in compliance with GAAP.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers and the executive team to provide data-driven financial insights for bidding, budgeting, and strategic planning.
