About The Position

The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Camp Music Conservatory Piano Studio Coordinator for the Arkansas and Oklahoma Conservatory of Music and Arts, located in Welling, OK. This is a summer position at Camp Heart O’ Hills. This position summary is not all-inclusive but is intended to identify the essential functions and requirements of this role. Incumbents may be asked to perform additional responsibilities and tasks beyond those listed. The Piano Studio Coordinator oversees the piano studio, developing and implementing a well-rounded curriculum that integrates both traditional and contemporary elements. The Piano Studio Coordinator will also serve as an accompanist for choir performances and select student and staff solos.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in piano pedagogy, including both traditional and contemporary techniques.
  • Knowledge of child and youth behavior and development principles.
  • Ability to provide effective instruction in both group and private lesson settings.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills to manage student progress and coordinate with staff.
  • Role-modeling abilities to inspire students artistically and personally.
  • Capability to work collaboratively in a dynamic camp environment and maintain flexibility in scheduling.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with groups, providing necessary instruction to students and staff.
  • Visual and auditory ability to assess camper and staff behavior, identify hazards, and respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Physical ability to supervise students, respond to emergencies, and apply first aid.
  • Must possess strength and endurance to maintain constant supervision of students.
  • Physical tasks may include climbing, standing, bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to perform activities are required.
  • Requires a normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate activities.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours in a seven-day-a-week schedule.
  • Exposure to sun, heat, and varying environmental conditions daily.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a safe, engaging learning environment that fosters students’ personal, artistic, and spiritual growth.
  • Conduct piano studio classes where each student is assigned a keyboard and headphones for individual practice.
  • Develop a curriculum that includes traditional elements, such as scales, fingerings, part reading, and contemporary skills, including chords, lead sheets, and song accompaniment.
  • Train students to become proficient church pianists who can: Accompany congregational singing and ensembles like adult and youth choirs. Perform as part of contemporary praise and worship ensembles. Pursue further education in music, including collegiate-level programs, if desired.
  • Teach private lessons focusing on piano technique and repertoire, preparing students for solo performances required for recital nights.
  • Serve as an accompanist for choir rehearsals and performances, as well as for student and staff solos.
  • Teaching music theory classes.
  • Creating lesson plans, scheduling private lessons, and grading assignments.
  • Monitoring student progress and preparing them for recitals and performances.
  • Informing the Conservatory Director of required supplies or music.
  • Maintaining and caring for Conservatory equipment and instruments.
  • Assisting with equipment setup and teardown for rehearsals and performances.
  • Playing with staff ensembles
  • Planning at least one night program.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, Bible studies, worship services, night programs, and Evensong.
  • Maintain proper student behavior, enforce disciplinary guidelines when necessary, and promote positive behavior.
  • Encourage the participation and safety of students at all times.
  • Provide guidance and role modeling to students both personally and artistically.
  • Ensure students are punctual, responsible, and in compliance with camp rules and regulations.
  • Assist with program activities as assigned by the Conservatory Director.
  • Maintain accurate incident reports and promptly report concerns to the Conservatory Director.
  • Keep personal living quarters clean and organized, ready for inspection.
  • Be available to assist and participate in all camp programs and activities as needed.
