The Conservation Specialist, Framer at Carnegie Museum of Art plays a crucial role in the care, repair, handling, design, fitting, alteration, and fabrication of frames for the museum's collection and loaned objects. This position encompasses a wide range of frame styles and periods, ensuring that artworks are properly prepared for exhibition, storage, and travel. The Conservation Specialist will work closely with the Senior Manager of Conservation and collaborate with the museum's in-house Conservation and Curatorial staff, as well as contract Conservators, to review, prepare, mat, hinge, mount, glaze, frame, and rehouse collection objects. A strong knowledge of materials is essential, as the Conservation Specialist must understand the strengths and limitations of different types of paper compositions, weights, orientations, and art-making processes. This knowledge is critical for making informed decisions about the long-term storage and display of artworks, both independently and in accordance with recommendations from the Senior Manager of Conservation. The role also involves managing the operations of framing at the museum, which includes creating and managing schedules, workflows, material inventories, communication, and staffing for all frame and paper housing projects. Collaboration is key in this position, as the Conservation Specialist will work closely with various departments within the Carnegie Museum of Art, including Art Preparation & Installation, Registration, Exhibitions, Collections Information, Curatorial, Design & Publishing, and Education. As a member of the Conservation department, the Conservation Specialist is expected to actively participate in the preservation of the museum's collections and will have opportunities for professional learning and training to enhance their skills relevant to upcoming museum projects.
