Transportation employees are responsible for serving our customer Union Pacific Railroad by providing the safe, on-time and on-plan movement of freight trains. From the switchman organizing freight cars in the train yard to the train crew’s delivery of goods.

Requirements

Must meet all physical requirements and be able to take direction.
Work Hours: Full Time. Weekly schedule may change as required. May be necessary to work weekends. Must be willing to work overtime as needed. On call 24 hours a day.
Equipment Requirement: Required to wear back support belt, gloves, eye and ear protection, hard hat, work boots, and other necessary safety equipment as tasks dictate.
Required to have high school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to read, write, and communicate English fluently and professionally. Ability to effectively communicate with and present information to all levels of employees, contractors, vendors, partners, owners and other inter-company divisions.
Requires basic analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to solve basic mathematical problems.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
Constant need (80% to 100% of the time) to be on feet.
Have constant need (80% to 100% of the time) to perform the following physical activities: Bend/Stoop/Squat/Kneel Pick up debris, etc. Climb Stairs or ladder Routine duties require access to all levels of railcars. Push or Pull Move equipment, open and close doors, etc. Reach Above Shoulder Stock and remove files, parts, and or equipment. Grasp/Grip/Turning Handle tools and equipment, etc. Finger Dexterity Handle tools and equipment, type, etc.
Lifting/carrying (supplies, files, parts, etc.): 25– 75 lbs. Frequent need ( 10% to 20% of the time) 1 – 35 lbs. Constant need (80% to 100% of the time)
NOTE: Lifting and carrying of weights exceeding 50 lbs. is often accomplished with assistance from one or more persons and while wearing the required, appropriate safety equipment. Examples of heaviest items lifted include knuckles, brake beams, and uncoupling levers that weigh approximately 25 to 50 lbs. etc.
Reliable transportation is required at all times. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license at all times. Employee must be willing to take calls and report to work at any hour of the day or night. Out of town travel may be required.
Constant need (80% to 100% of the time) to observe areas needing attention/correction. Read cautionary labels; respond to written instructions from staff.
Constant need (80% to 100% of the time) to see things clearly beyond arm’s reach. Observe and assist in general maintenance; observe problems throughout property.
Constant need (80% to 100% of the time) to be able to differentiate common railroad signaling colors (red, green, yellow and blue).
Essential. Must be able (80% to 100% of the time) to hear things clearly and be able to receive verbal instructions.
Constant need (80% to 100% of the time) to verbally communicate with the staff, partners, vendors, etc.
Outdoors (80% to 100% of the time), all conditions, often for extended periods of time.
Exposure (50% to 90% of time) to paint fumes, lubricants, dust, loud noises, etc. Example: repair of railcars and switching will be close by the work area.
Employee may be required to travel to multiple locations throughout the United States and often to walk various areas which can be upstairs, noisy, dirty, uneven, or dark. Out of town travel may be required.
HIGH. Must be able to apply principles of logical thinking to a variety of practical situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may occasionally involve minor deviations. Needs ability to think rationally beyond a specific set of instructions.

Responsibilities

Responsible for train operation and movement.
Pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying up to 25 pounds frequently, 50 pounds occasionally, and assisting in the infrequent movement of weights of up to 83 pounds.
Coupling air hoses.
Uncoupling cars.
Applying and releasing hand brakes.
Riding rail cars and climbing onto equipment.
Applying bilateral use of upper extremities when needed, such as maintaining a grip with both hands.
Maintaining balance and coordination on stairs, ladders, uneven terrain, moving equipment, rails, and ballast.
Maintaining three-point contact when holding on a ladder or train.
Removing, replacing, and carrying knuckles and aligning drawbars.
Following safety precautions.
Reading and comprehending regulations and instructions.
Preparing written documentation and materials.
Working and interacting with others.
Inspecting the conditions and operations of equipment and machines and making adjustments (may require bending or stooping).
Monitoring, observing, interpreting, and relaying signals and placards to gather and communicate information.
Analyzing and troubleshooting problems to identify solutions or alternatives.
Monitoring the situation, environment, and gauges to gather information and take appropriate action (requires ability to recognize sounds and changes in sounds and requires color vision, the ability to detect and interpret visual stimuli, day and night, at near and far distances, including hand signals, printed material text, and the speed and distance of moving objects).
Communicating clearly with co-workers and train dispatchers via radio.
Basic keyboarding.
Operate locomotive equipment including the use of a remote control device.
Perform hostler operations of operating locomotives between various shop locations, service tracks and switching areas.
