SummaryThe Concrete Material Specialist is responsible for the selection, testing, qualification, and performance assurance of concrete materials used in construction projects. This role ensures all concrete mixes meet structural, durability, constructability, and regulatory requirements while supporting field operations, quality control, and continuous improvement initiatives. The position bridges engineering theory with practical, jobsite-driven execution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related discipline - Master’s preferred
  • Minimum of 5–10 years of experience in concrete materials engineering, testing, or quality management in a construction or materials environment
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • ACI certifications (Concrete Field-Testing Technician, Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician, Concrete Technologist).
  • Familiarity with ASTM, ACI, AASHTO, and DOT specifications
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • May require travel to project locations and occasional off-hours support during critical pours
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business documents, technical procedures, and government regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to engineers, superintendents, and craft personnel
  • Good listening skills
  • Ability to calculate mathematical figures such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, and proportions to practical situations
  • Ability to understand, customize and modify spreadsheets
  • Ability to work with all levels of co-workers in a team environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities grounded in practical field experience and determine best course of action for effective resolutions
  • Solid understanding of concrete behavior under real-world construction conditions

Responsibilities

  • Develops, reviews, and approves concrete mix designs in accordance with project specifications, ASTM, ACI, and state DOT requirements
  • Evaluates cementitious materials, aggregates, admixtures, and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) for performance, availability, and cost effectiveness
  • Optimizes mixes for strength, durability, workability, setting characteristics, and constructability under varying environmental conditions
  • Oversees laboratory and field-testing programs for fresh and hardened concrete
  • Interprets test data (slump, air, strength, maturity, durability indicators, etc.) and take corrective action when results fall outside acceptance criteria
  • Investigate concrete-related nonconformances, failures, or performance issues and implement corrective and preventive measures
  • Provides technical support to project teams, batch plant operations, and field personnel
  • Troubleshoots placement, finishing, curing, and early-age performance issues
  • Assists with pre-construction planning, trial batches, and mock-ups as required
  • Ensures compliance with contract documents, codes, standards, and agency requirements
  • Maintains complete and accurate documentation for mix approvals, test reports, and certifications
  • Supports audits, inspections, and agency reviews
  • Monitors industry advancements in materials, testing methods, and sustainability practices
  • Evaluates new products and technologies, including low-carbon concrete solutions where appropriate
  • Contributes to standardization of best practices across projects and regions
