About The Position

The Computer Systems Specialist I position is responsible for providing technical support and solutions to various departments within the County of Santa Barbara. This role involves evaluating and recommending changes to computer systems, administering local and wide area networks, developing websites, and maintaining databases. The incumbent will work with minimal technical support and serve as the primary contact for departmental staff and central ICT staff, ensuring effective use of technology in departmental operations.

Requirements

  • Completion of training in computerized applications and basic principles of computer programming.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in providing technical support for computer equipment in a network environment, hardware/software installation, or adapting database software.
  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and work in tight spaces.

Nice To Haves

  • Fluency in English and Spanish is desirable for some positions.
  • Experience with web site layout, design, and management.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and resolve user problems; identify and obtain appropriate resources for complex problem resolution.
  • Instruct computer system users in the use of computer equipment and applications; assist in resolving issues regarding methods and procedures for using applications.
  • Coordinate installation of new hardware/software; install, test, and monitor the operation of computer systems.
  • Evaluate needs for new and revised systems; recommend purchases of new information systems hardware and software; negotiate with vendors.
  • Administer LANs/WANs; establish procedures for data backup and maintain efficient operation of networks.
  • Provide server support and maintenance; troubleshoot and repair server configurations.
  • Adapt existing database software and programs to meet departmental needs.
  • Establish and maintain Internet and Intranet web sites; provide technical support for content creation and automation of processes.
  • Maintain records and documentation for departmental computer systems; write report generation programs as needed.
