Requirements

• Licensed to practice Radiologic Technology in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia; license(s) must be full and unrestricted.
• Certified in general Radiologic Technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
• Advanced certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Computed Tomography for specialty coverage.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be issued by the American Heart Association. (PWS 6.1 Reports/Deliverables table)
• Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration in a diagnostic radiology technology program evidenced by a certificate or associate degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other accrediting agency recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
• Minimum three years of experience in examinations performed at the Syracuse Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Computed Tomography modality.
• Knowledge and training in cross-sectional human anatomy and its application in spiral and/or multi-slice computed tomography, including three-dimensional reconstruction scans, inclusive of drainages, biopsies, and peripheral vascular examinations.
• Experience with general X-ray and performing a full range of Computed Tomography exams, including contrasted and non-contrasted examinations and tracking reportable CT doses.
• Experience and knowledge of Intravenous Contrast Agents used in Radiology and hydration procedures.
• Knowledge of Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).
• Must be able to read, write, and speak English to effectively communicate.
• US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required.
• Pass/possess VA Public Trust Clearance.

• Additional required experience areas include (as applicable): Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP); Gastrointestinal series; Modified Barium Swallow; portable C-arm cases (including pain management); 128-slice scanners; Cardiac Computed Tomography with retro/prospective gating; interventional/Computed Tomography procedures with computed tomography fluoroscopy.

Responsibilities

• Prepare the patient for radiographic procedures by assessing needs, providing pretest patient education, explaining procedures, answering questions, and providing reassurance and support; ensure understanding of discharge instructions.
• Monitor the patient for potentially dangerous physical and emotional changes during examinations; recognize abnormal changes and immediately notify the physician.
• Perform diagnostic imaging examinations according to the service’s procedures; locate and record internal elements of the body, including blood vessels and organs.
• Perform a full range of Computed Tomography examinations, consisting of both contrasted and non-contrasting examinations, and track reportable Computed Tomography doses as required.
• Perform quality control measures to ensure optimal quality images; adjust equipment and position the patient to eliminate test artifacts.
• Evaluate test results for clarity and accuracy and take corrective action where appropriate.
• Protect the patient from unnecessary radiation exposure by positioning lead shields or limiting the size of X-ray beams.
• Practice As Low as Reasonably Achievable (ALARA), display proper radiation shielding, monitoring devices, and wear a dose badge; report any high-dose patient exposure to the facility Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).
• Follow all national and local guidelines including those of the Veterans Administration National Health Physics Program.
• Prepare contrast agents.
• Record pharmaceutical doses accurately (as applicable).
• Log data into patient information systems and update file systems for tests performed.
• Prepare digital images for interpretation by the radiologist; transmit electronic images and reports digitally via the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).
• Review all pending cases daily and enter Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) notes for pending cases not completed on the same date of request, stating reason for delay and including a plan to complete the study; include the requesting provider for acknowledgement.
• Ensure contractor-generated Veterans Affairs (VA) patient records are captured in the VA electronic health record system as required by VA policy; do not access, release, transfer, or destroy VA patient records except in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
• Clean and disinfect equipment and workspace per standard operating procedure.
• Recognize equipment malfunctions and readjust equipment or refer for repair.
• Practice safety measures in radiography, radiation safety, infection control, and environment of care.
• Practice accurate and timely completion of scheduled and unscheduled work to maximize productivity.
• Apply the profession’s code of ethics in all aspects of practice.
• Demonstrate mental and emotional tolerance and even temperament when dealing with patients, families, and co-workers; use tact, sensitivity, sound judgment, and professional attitudes.
• Communicate with customers (for example, veterans and family members), co-workers, and supervisors in a courteous, tactful, friendly, and cooperative manner; respond to inquiries related to patient care in a timely manner.
• Adhere to all facility and service-level policies and procedures, including infection control policies.
• Sign in and out when in attendance; use Microsoft Outlook emails for sign-in/sign-out in addition to timesheets; sign in/out within 10 minutes of arrival/departure; include a daily list of cases performed.
• Follow established patient safety and infection control standards of care; make every effort to prevent medication errors, falls, and patient injury; document events in the medical record, disclose to patient/surrogate as soon as practicable (within 24 hours), and report to the Contracting Officer’s Representative; submit the Patient Safety Reporting System.
• Complete required organizational compliance education, including assigned requirements that are client-specified, for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.
