Applied Composites (AC) is seeking a Composite Technician 2 who will be responsible for placing resin pre-impregnated fabrics and tapes onto layup molds using hands, wrists, and arms to apply pressure and remove air pockets; requires knowledge of fabric direction and ply orientation. Cuts vacuum bag materials and creates vacuum bags. Prepares parts for transfer to the autoclave department. Ensures layups and vacuum bags are prepared according to the requirements of manufacturing travelers. The technician learns quickly, works quickly, does not make mistakes often, perform high-quality work, works well with others, and is focused on completing the task. Requirements

  • A Secondary Certificate/High School Diploma or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience that will allow successful performance of job expectations
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • Ability to lay up and vacuum bag complex parts
  • Previous composites experience and/or knowledge
  • Possesses knowledge of composites and composite terms
  • Awareness of the overall composites process (design, tooling, layup, cure, trim, assembly, and inspection)
  • Possesses excellent technical management and communication skills
  • Ability to manage time to get work completed on schedule
  • Ability to communicate process issues with leads, supervisors, and engineering
  • Ability to coordinate workflow with other departments
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment performing accurate and quality products
  • Ability to read and interpret company documents, such as safety rules, operating/manufacturing instructions, policies and procedures
  • Good manual dexterity required to work with small parts
  • Capable of recognizing and solving typical problems that can occur in own work area; evaluates and selects solutions from established options
  • Effective oral, written and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

  • Read and follow basic instructions and diagrams in English
  • Use basic shop math skills to record information such as freezer out-time, or mixture weights
  • Follow standard shop practices and quality standards in the aerospace industry
  • Prepare molds using shop-approved release agents
  • Layup materials to molds and remove air pockets using approved hands, squeegees, and heat guns.
  • Occasionally mix resins and catalysts as specified
  • Trim laminated fabric using scissors or knives without damaging the layup mold
  • Perform physical and environmental checks and document work for manufacturing travelers
  • Builds semi-complex ply-buildups under minimal supervision, ensuring that the plies are well-compacted
  • Vacuum bag parts applying best practices, ensuring that the vacuum bags do not leak during cure
  • Regular, consistent, and punctual attendance is required. May need to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s), and additional hours as necessary.
