About The Position

Kaman Air Vehicles is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Composite Layup Technician to join our team. This role involves working hands-on with composite materials and components in a fast-paced, quality-focused aerospace environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical training in composites preferred.
  • 1–3 years’ experience in composite kit cutting, layup, and autoclave operations (aerospace experience strongly preferred).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, ply schedules, and process specifications.
  • Familiarity with material control, freezer management, and traceability requirements.
  • Proficient with precision measuring instruments (calipers, gauges, templates).
  • Comfortable using computer systems for cure data recording, documentation, and ERP/MRP systems.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working in temperature-controlled cleanroom and autoclave environments.
  • Manual dexterity and strong attention to detail required for precision tasks.
  • All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an FAA Part 21 production environment or AS9100-certified facility is desirable.
  • Knowledge of composite materials, resin systems, and curing processes preferred; training available for qualified candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Follow work orders, process sheets, and verbal/written instructions accurately.
  • Diagnose and repair blade damage by replacing components as needed.
  • Perform assembly and bonding of shaped components using adhesives and composite materials.
  • Execute dry fitting, autoclave preparation, curing processes, lay-up, and vacuum bagging operations.
  • Cut composite plies and dry fabrics with manual and automated cutting tools (e.g., CNC cutting tables, hand tools).
  • Identify ply orientation, patterns, and sequences using kit drawings and cut files.
  • Verify material traceability, shelf life, and storage conditions, including freezer management.
  • Label, package, and organize kits for production layup with complete and accurate documentation.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools such as mallets, scissors, knives, dremels, sanders, and drills.
  • Lay up composite plies (carbon fiber, fiberglass, aramid, etc.) into molds following engineering drawings and ply schedules.
  • Apply adhesives, core materials, and bonding films per specifications.
  • Maintain strict control of fiber orientation, ply count, and prevent foreign object debris (FOD).
  • Assist with moving fixtures as required.
  • Contribute ideas to improve technical documentation, work instructions, and certification processes.
  • Adhere to the highest safety and environmental standards while meeting production targets.
  • Support internal and external audits including FAA, AS9100, and customer inspections.
  • Take responsibility for own work and demonstrate a positive, team-oriented mindset.
  • Participate in on-the-job training as needed for skill development.
